New truck questions
I am full of questions and this is what this forum is all about. Can you tell I am very close to ordering a new Ford Diesel Did a post of on the Buying a 4X4 topic on the wisdom of going with a 4X4..
Now..when I purchased the V-10 we went with the tow boss package(4:30 Diff) because we felt we needed all the additional torque we could get with the V-10. The question is do we NEED the tow boss package on the 6.4 diesel. The diesel of course has much more torque and power than the V-10. If we are to go with the diesel it will have to pay for the additional cost of the motor and one area is MPG. What are most of you (Ford guys) towing with 3:73 4:10..4:30. The MPG on the 6.4 is not all that great.. My first thought is that we do not need the 4:30.

I would go with the 3:73, I had it in my '06, loved it, kept the RPM's down over the 4series, plenty of power.
I also have it in my '08, haven't towed with it yet, but anticipate good results. With the Diesel, no problem Senior....
Sorry I didn't get right back this A.M. to you.

Rich, with the GM, the 3:73 are very good choice. I really think it would be the same with the Ford. By the way, those new Fords look great!

Rich, Check all the numbers, I believe the Trailer towing capacity changes with each rear end differential....

Rich I was told over the phone on Friday that 373 was not an option on the 350 dually. I'm going in this PM and find out the truth, it could be possible but what a dumb move by Ford if it is true. In 95 on the 350 ford had 1 rear end 410.

Phil..yes it does,The Tow capacity , according to my 08 F-350 book, is the same 3:73 or 4:10 15,2K
The 4:30 (tow boss) brings that up to 17.7K Now GCWR with the 3:73/4:10 is 23.5K and 4:30 26K
The 3:73 is well within all specs for the 3400...in theory,, I am interested in real life.

Got to agree with Ozz on this one. I'm not sure what the torque rating is on the 08 Ford, but I would think it is a lot more than my 04 GMC, and the 3.73:1 gears are plenty for it.

I have the 4.10 and if I had it to do over again I would have the 3.73.

If the 3.73 will handle your 3400RL (regarding the GCWR), why get a different one? Unless you have plans for something bigger in the 5th wheel department, there is no need.

Ok, Another vote for 3.73...I have the 2003 6.0L w/torque shift tranny. No problems at anytime towing. On off chance when in tight campsites...found the 4x4 High/Low are also available "features" for parking in non-typical sites.

Chuck..The 3:73 and 4:10 are standard no charge on the "build your truck " Ford site. the others are a option. So 3:73 it is..this will make is easier to find on in dealer stock.

Rich: Happened to stop by Ford Dealer in Wichita this morning; sales droid trying to push a 4.10 on me vs. 3.73. Told me that difference is about 10% (which is true) and that milease drop would be about 1 to 1.5 miles per gallon (that I question). In any case, talking to local Ford Dealer this afternoon, they said that on the 6.0s the drop was about 1 to 1.5; 6.7s too new but they are hearing it being more in the line of 2 to 3 mpg difference. I've only had 3.73s in my Ford and my Dodges, and have had no problems. 3.73 a good all around ratio.

I have the 4:10's as that is your choice if you want limited slip rear axle. I had 3.73's in my '04 and opted for the 4:10's when I traded to the '06. If you do mostly pulling with your truck you just as well get the bigger gears, it will make your engine work less and have less wear and tear later on in life.

The 3.73 will handle your 3400 and keep the rpm down for a little better mpg.

In my opinion you need the Tow Boss only if you need the additional ratings. Otherwise, to me, it's spending money for something you won't use. If you might trade for a heavier fifthwheel while you still have the truck, then it might be worthwhile to get the Tow Boss package now. Meanwhile, your mpg will suffer because of the axle ratio.
