grand canyon in feb ? Updated april

I know this is a little out of this forum, but who better to ask then all the travelers who use this site. We are heading to Vegas and surrounding areas the last week of feburary.Has anyone gone to the south rim area this time of year and is the weather ok ? Also we were looking at staying in Williams AZ and taking the train trip to the rim and back. My question now, is it worth it going there this time of year? We have been to Vegas several times and also to Hoover dam and wanted to spread our wings a little further out this time. (also I think my wife wants to keep me from the machines for a while longer !) thank you in advance for any help or comments you may have. PS. like I have said before, I also have a system, but for some reason the casino's must know it too!!

Well, trip never happened. had a loss in our family just 5 days before leaving, so as you all know prioities in life.
So now, we are leaving april 9th to the 16th, Weather looks a lot better this month so we are going to Sedona first and taking day trip to south and east rim of canyon. Could'nt do the train deal, hotel put us in for wrong stay dates and when we fixed it they had no rim tours left, just the train to the rim.
Again, thanks for all the advice and help. I think this ended up the better time to go. Also thanks to ROCKY2 for your help, I have been checking that weather site you recommended and has helped. My wife is on it daily checking conditions for temps.
You know got to have the RIGHT clothes and shoes to wear.

Racerjoe, after Quartzsite last year, a number of us went to Benson then Ajo, just north of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. By the time we were ready to head back to Vegas, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the meteor crater and swing through the south rim of the canyon. Well, Flagstaff got snowed on, and the weather at the canyon was very cold, with snow on the ground. We'll try it this year when we go to the spring get together in Tucson in April.

Racerjoe, We were headed to Masa for spring training in March of 06. We stopped in Prescott Az to see the Painted Desert and the Petrified Rocks. We ended up stranded in the Campground at Prescott for 3 additional nights as all roads out of there to Mesa were under 40 inches of snow. A couple of people stranded in the same campground had barely made it out of the south rim. Anything can happen up there that time of year. On the bright side we met some great RV'ers at the campground in the same situation.

The best way to see the Grand Canyon in Feb from Vegas is the Helicopter tour. It is next to the Hacienda ( memory serves right) Weather and cold the winding roads no longer an issue. After you figure fuel prices not very expensive.

Shouldn't have any problem with snow here. It's located between Boulder and Kingman, a few miles off the highway on a gravel road.

Thanks to all, The grand canyon Skywalk, I forgot all about that also. We are going to contact them for info. Hopefully either a copter tour or the skywalk tour will be our highlight. You know what they say,"the mind is the first to go"

When yu find out the prices.....have a chair waiting.......we were at the Grand Canyon twice in two years in Feb.....snowed in/Frozen in it at Flagstaff for three days...It can get cold so bundle up if yu go(wind chill)....we went to Williams and though it was cold we didnt get too much snow...the roads were treacherous........If you go...pick your travel and stay times and dates ....its doable on cool days..go in early and take the day....its worth it..(both times for us)

Hi all of you.
We are staying in Dolan Springs AZ (out past town about 7 miles) right off the road that goes out to Grand Canyon West.
If you head out that way stop and say Hi.
I can give you directions if you give me a heads up.

Wear your long johns if going out there - it has been cold and windy.
And note you can't take pictures while on the skywalk - you have to take your shoes off and cannot take anything that could be dropped on the glass with you.
And it costs an extra $25 to go out there.

We went out there years ago when it was just barely a tour place and it was very enjoyable. Now 3000 people or so a day go out there.

Happy travels,
Laura

Thanks again for all the info. Right now our gut feeling is we might be better off on going up that way next time we go to vegas, in warmer weather. we are still going to check on the weather just before we leave to see what is going on there. Rocky2 if you don't mind I might e-mail you to get a report. It will be close to the 20th of feb. Living in western NY, every time I think about Arizona or Calif. I think of mild weather, forgetting about areas that get snow too. We just don't want to get stranded there, the casinos might lose to much money if I don't get back in time LOL...

We're headed east from LA on Saturday. We drove out here through Flagstaff (no rv), planning to go back that way before continuing south on 17 to 10 and Dallas, then Florida before turning north to Vermont.

Given iffy weather, possible black ice with snow and melting snow, we decided not to haul our 3500RL up to Flagstaff. We plan to take 10, stopping in Quartzsite, then to Black Canyon City, north of Phoenix, off 17 north. We'll make day trips to Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater, weather permitting, as day trips before heading toward Tucson, and points east.

I went in late Dec a number of years ago. Snowed 19" in Flagstaff on Friday and I almost canceled my plans as I had planned on the canyon on Sunday. But Saturday the weather broke out beautiful. On Sunday I went to the canyon. Roads had been cleared. Something in the range of 6"-8" fresh new snow at the canyon with very few foot prints, except for the animals. Sunny with temp about 40 degrees with absolutely no wind. A light jacket was all that was needed. Friday snow had apparently scared everyone off as I had almost every overlook to myself. So quiet I could actually hear the river from a couple of the overlooks. Could not have been better if I had special ordered it. So my wish to you is that you get as lucky as I did.

racerjoe,
I will give you a weather forecast anytime!
It is supposed to be warming up a bit but will see.
It is 44 degrees right now and almost 11 AM.

We went to Laughlin yesterday and it was beautiful.
It is always warmer there.
