Bad EGR in Duramax

Just a heads up for everyone. My 2006lbz Duramax started knocking and smoking badly last weekend while towing the 5er. After a little research I was fairly sure it was a sticking EGR. Took it to the dealer and they tell me it is bad fuel. After many conversations stressing that I thought they should look at the EGR before pulling my fuel tank and spending my money. I gave in and had the fuel system cleaned to a cool $804.00. I agreed to this so they could not deniy any future warranty claims. Well pick up the truck today and 10 miles later same problem. They are now replacing EGR and refunding my $804. I have read about others with the same problem and the first thing the dealer does is claim bad fuel because that is what GM says to check First.

I'm glad to hear you got your money back. All too often they won't do that.

Thanks for the headsup. Sticky EGR's plague all of today's engines except those few without an EGR valve. The Cummins even has one in the 6.7 now.

Tom that happen to me on one of my trips back in July. ONSTAR did a check and that was what it showed. They told me to turn off the engine and wait 10 minutes and the computer would reset it. Sure enough it worked. This happen on the 4th of July and everything was closed. It would run about 80 miles and stick again and I keep resetting it until I was able to get it to the dealer. So if it happens to you again remember to do that. The dealer told me that would work most of the time but not for long. I never heard such knocking and smoking in my life.
