Shades Up or Down

My wife thinks we need to put all our roller shades up before traveling? Anyone know if this is necessary?

It keeps them from banging around

She's right, IT IS!. The short ones may not matter but the big one definitely need to be up. The shaking and banging can be too much.

Have never had an issue and generally keep mine down to keep the rig cooler while traveling.

I don't know about the shades Montana installs but we pull our MCD blackout shades down when traveling in hot weather (like right now). It keeps the inside considerably cooler when we arrive at out site.

The issue with MCD roll up shades being down while towing is…

Inside the roll up t7be is a plastic black wheel with 3 small tabs (bumps) on the wheel.., this is the internal brake mechanism that. Holds the shade is position ..

With shade extended all the way out every bump, etc those shades are being moved around a lot due to gravity and weight of extended shade material..

The result over time will be .. worn out internal brake wheel and you will find the shades rolled all the way down and will not roll back up and hold any position.

Back in 2015 I had one of my MCD shades due this..I was towing with shades extended to keep out the UV.. spoke with a tech at MCD and he told me how to fix the internal brake wheel with a hot soldering iron to make 3 new “bumps” on the brake wheel

He also explained why you want to tow with the MCD shades rolled up .. still have same RV today and repaired MCD shade works as advertised and never had issues with the other shades.

If you have the Irving roll up shades a similar brake mechanism is used internally to hold shades in place so I would suspect you could also damage this by towing with shades rolled down

Link for Irving shades.. scroll down to view internal brake parts

Since we have experienced a lot of problems with the shades breaking, I consulted with the manufacture and they suggested traveling with the shades up to minimize the wear on the locking mechanism. I just got tired of fixing the darn things!!

We travel with all of ours up... every camper we've ever hand, roller shades and venation blind type shades. I can't see the purpose of them being exposed to getting banged up and damaged. If you had nothing in your cabinets to fall out, would you leave your cabinet doors open while traveling? Why not? Same holds true for the shades.

I leave my shades up or down. If they are up I leave that way and if down I leave them down.

We do exactly the same thing.

We always put ours up before towing (MCD's). Just part or our routine "take-off" checklist now.

I once was in a gas station filling up when a trailer pulled in. He had a broken window on the side rear. I mentioned it to him and he did not know it was broken. Probably a rock from a highway construction site up the road. If that happens with blinds up the rock can do more damage than if blinds down to slow the rock down or stop it.

Shades up or down

Ron we have always traveled with the shades down in order to keep the unit as cool as possible while traveling.
For the first time in 5 yrs the shades and valance by the dining table came down. The screws that held the valance and shades in place were embarrassing small and we winder why they held for 5 yrs.
The rear shade, by the couch, are kept from moving because we have the couch pillows holding it in place.

I'm with the wife, keeps them from slamming open and destroying the spring mechanisms. Replacing those shades isn't cheap. Had to replace one on the small windows. The screen blind and black out blinds are a kit and you have to replace them both even though only one goes out. It cost me $129 for a window that is 12 inches wide
