What hitch do you like

Hi, I’m getting a 2023 2123rl fifth wheel. Currently have aTT. So I’m also getting 1 ton truck. So I actually have 2 questions. First, can I get by without a long bed? Second, what hitch does everyone have and do you recommend it?

Demco Recon has several variations of this hitch, gooseneck, sliders, under floor mount, etc. Start here for your research.

The thing I REALLY like about the Demco Recon is the fact, it comes apart in 3 pieces. None of the pieces alone are all that heavy. It's very easy to separate the 3 pieces and move them alone.

The other thing I really liked about the Recon was the fact it didn't cost a small fortune. Also, it's very strong, and dependable. I've never had any issues with it.

I think the reason most folks don't want to mess with this one is, because it is a no-frills hitch. It doesn't have air bags or shocks or things like that.

They've come a long way over the last 4 or 5 years with their product line. They now have goosneck and ball mount fifth wheel hitches now too, including sliders.

So, this is one worthy of exploring for a very sound, stable, reliable, no-frills, affordable hitch.

Again, the greatest feature about this hitch is it's ability to come apart so easy and remove it from the bed of the truck with no assistance from anyone else, or wenches, or fork lifts.

I run the B and W companion slider in a short box. Never used the slider but there if needed. Most new 5th wheels are designed to use with a short bed

Great hitch, downside, too heavy to remove by myself, trailer and truck must be straight when connecting and disconnecting. If I had known I would have gone with a manual slide. Do you need a slide? Not really, you'll rarely be at 90 degrees. I have a short bed.

I ended up with the B & W. The dealer we purchased the trailer from said that I wouldn't need the slider and he was right. So far we have had plenty of room between the cab and the trailer, that doesn't mean that it wouldn't hit but we have been in some tight spots and there was room to spare.

What truck do you have? I know one of the factors was the new GMC's move the puck system around in the back which I believe helped.

For what it's worth, the B&W can be moved in 2 pieces and at least at the stage of life I am at now I can move it without a problem.

Good plan to purchase a 1 ton truck.,,,,,,,in the event you purchase a lager and heavier trailer.

You can get buy with a 6.5 ft short bed so long as you are very careful when making sharp turns while backing.....I had one for many years.

I like a standard fifth wheel hitch...............downside is they are heavy, if you want to remove it from the bed........but never had a need to do that.

We have been very happy with it. The only issue so far was a couple of broken shades which I worked with Keystone and they sent me new ones. Overall very happy, we put about 4500 miles on it last year so hoping to get at least that many in this year.

I bought mine from the dealer that sold me the Montana and paid them to install it on my (then) 2014 Chevy 3500 SRW long bed truck. Later I traded the 2014 for my current truck and had Chevy dealer move the rails to the new truck. I don’t remember what they charged me unfortunately.

Most people have had one hitch or one brand. They are all good hitches. Check out the hitches are available for you. There is no need to go to extremes to find a hitch. You can’t hardly go wrong with any of them. Get what is available.

Our dealer when we purchased our Montana. I gave him the criteria I wanted, because I wasn't familiar with different brands, makes, or models. He selected this one, confided with me, talked about the pros-and-cons of this and other brands. He recommended this one from my criteria list, and it was truly a winner!

I've used a Reese, Curt, and Andersen over the many years of pulling a fiver. Hands down I like the Andersen best. Some people were offended over what the owner of Andersen hitches did or didn't do at some park, but I go by function ... not what happened in some employee's personal life. There is supposed issue with a manufacturer warranty and Andersen hitches, you'll just have to decide how stout the Magnuson-Moss Act really is.

I have the B&W Companion 25K hitch. I also have a long bed 1 ton truck with a puck system. Works very well and very solid hitch, however somewhat heavy. In order to get it out of the truck it needs to be removed in 2 pieces.

Ditto the Demco Recon. Have been very happy with it in our short bed truck. Never an issue. You do need to pay attention in a tight turn but, in my experience, needing to turn that tightly is quite rare. It can happen, but if you plan your approach well you can usually avoid it.

We are also going from TT to 5th wheel. Upgraded truck from 3/4 ton to 1 ton dually. Probably going with B&W 25k puck.

However looking at Goosebox as a possibility which eliminates the hitch but don’t know if it would be as stable.
