awning leaks

I have an awning that has a metal shield which covers the awning when retracted. My problem is that the awning is attached to the shield with stitching. That is where the dripping happens. The awning must be stretching at these stitches? Any thoughts on what I might do to fix this? Someone mentioned wax but not what kind. Anyone have this problem and fixed it? How?
Thanks in advance
Ed

You can buy waterproofing used for hiking shoes, tent seams, etc at places like REI and other outdoor sports stores.

Waxes like for boots such as mink oil which comes in a can will likely work. I have used surfboard wax successfully on seams for our canopy and other things and it works very well to seal out water.
