Friction Hinge Door Replacement
Hi All,
Hubby is going to replace the friction hinge with Lippert 6 leaf door Hinge Assembly for entry door. He has hated this "upgrade" since purchase. If anyone has done this operation, and has wisdom to share before he begins, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, we will be installing a T-style door holder, but I see there are various sizes. Any advice on the appropriate door holder to accommodate this retro?

We did. Only issue was for each hinge, screw holes did not all match up. Some black caulk took care of that. I used the large door latch, go with metal, the plastic do not hold up.

Thank you! Do you recall where you got the metal door holder?

There are many types of entry door holders...white plastic, black plastic, stainless steel, and some folks have used magnetic holders.

Did mine awhile back,I did one hinge at a time made it lot easier then taking door all the way off. And you only need 2 hinges the center one is not a fiction hinge.

Have you tried relieving the friction point of the hinge by drilling the dimple in the hinge joint? A small 1/8" bit drilled through the first layer of the knuckle joint, removing the peened/dimpled area of the hinge. Try doing one and seeing if the reduction in tension is acceptable before doing the second. You've got nothing to lose if you are planning on ultimately replacing the hinge anyway. You'll also be wise to install a door holder on the exterior to prevent wind from slamming the door closed if there is not one there currently.

FWIW when the friction hinges finally gave up the ghost on our door, we installed one set of the same sort of magnets that hold the basement hatches open to hold the door open. Purchased from Amazon. I thought I'd need more than one but thus far it's worked out well. The only negative is you can't use the exterior outlet - the magnet holds the door too close to the wall.

I too did not like the friction hinge. Sprayed it with PTFE dry lube and loosened it up. On windy days the door would not stay open so I put in a magnetic door catch I ordered on Amazon for $9. Looks nice and magnet is very strong.
