Wet bearings

Has anyone converted there wheel bearings to the oil filled type used on boat trailers and some high end RVs? Any info would be helpful.

The industry offers sealed units similar to those used in the auto industry. When I had independent suspension and disc brakes added last year, I was offered my choice of the standard bearings or the newer style. I opted for the standard for a couple of reasons. The first being, I've replaced a few of those sealed units and know lots of others who have too. If you have a car/truck and they start to go bad, you can feel and sometimes hear it. With a trailer, I doubt you would notice until the wheel and tire passed you going down hill. The other reason is I like to inspect thing periodically to make sure other things are OK, and doing the wheel bearings gives an opportunity to check out (and adjust on drum style trailers) the brakes and seals, along with the wet bolts and shackles. You can also check the bearings and races for signs of unusual wear. Note, even though I used the 'Easy Lube' system, I still did all these checks, including examining the bearings.

I drove big rigs for 20 years and only had 1 seal to leak of the oil filled type. I have considered this conversion myself but always seems to get put on the back burner.

had oil bath on the front wheels of my freightliner chassis diesel pusher. they were great. did have one leak that was easily taken care of by a seal. even on a regular hub, get a leak due to a seal and you get crap on the brake linings that result in a cleaning of the linings. no big deal. The bonus with oil bath is that you can see the level of lub and easily add oil to the line. John
