Landing gear problem

I have a 2006 Mountaineer 329xxx and a couple of years ago started getting a popping noise when raising the unit off the truck hitch. The first several inches are ok, but the higher I raise it the more frequent the popping noise occurs. I have checked the gears in the top of the landing gear legs and the gear box that drives the legs and they all appear to be good. I've also checked the gear box attached to the motor and I suspect the clutch is slipping when under strain since the legs are still in sync. I have never exceeded the max up or down travel on the landing gear, but I don't know about the previous owner. Does anyone know if the clutch can be replaced? All I can find is the motor with the clutch gear box attached which is kinda bad since my motor is good.

The Montanas of that era used landing legs from Venture Manufacturing. Perhaps so did the Mountaineer? Te Venture people are great to work with. Here are some contacts from sometime ago. ideally one or more still work. Contact them and see what they can do for you.

Ditto to Carl and Susan's comment. I had a landing leg replaced and they were great to work with. And I wrote to Patty back in 2010, so she knows what's what.

Sounds like the gears are skipping even though they appear ok - get them rebuilt. If you're handy the rebuild kits are inexpensive and they aren't that difficult to do, I rebuild both of mine in a couple hours.

If it was the gear at the top of the legs, the legs would go out of 'balance'. Since yours seem to be equal, it is probably the clutch/gear assembly that is part of the motor.

Upon further inspection I found one of the positioning tabs on the gear reduction box was broken off allowing the gear box to rotate 45* or more clockwise when raising the coach. Also, the gear box is plastic and is warped about 1/4". This may be the problem. I have ordered a replacement aluminum housing gear box. We'll see if this fixes it. I'll report back later. On my 2010 3400RL, I’ve had to change both landing gear. The first one was April 2019. I did notice a little clicking sound,but didn’t give it much thought. Then hooking up to head back north from Texas it was just about to the height needed to hook up the trailer when bam, the leg gave out and dropped the one side of the trailer a good two feet. PIA to get it jacked up with bottle jacks to get it on the truck. Needless to say I stayed hooked up till I got to my dealer and dropped it off for a new leg. Then this July coming back from a week long trip I noticed the other leg (not making any noise) was not coming down equally with the other one. So to avoid Last years drama I ordered a new leg ($108.00 on Amazon) installation was a 15 minute job. Many videos on YouTube. Mine has a Lippert system. Good luck

I was trying to make a quick getaway and neglected to fully retract and pull up the landing pads on my 2006 Mountaineer. A hump in the road "reminded" me that they weren't fully raised, and were now jammed. It took a lot but I was able to "McGyver" the Monty higher when I got home and replaced the legs and a few brackets with Lippert components. Worked fine, but I did have a Lippert landing gear.

The gear at the top drives both legs equally. The square tube going between the legs keeps them in balanced.
