Florida-Illinois

We're currently near Ocala, Fl and will be leaving for home the first week in March. We want to avoid our normal route which is 75 north to 24 and west.
We have never been through Alabama and would like to check it out.
Any recommendations on routes, campgrounds and sites to see would be appreciated.
I don't mind going off the beaten path, just not with Monty.

Stop at the Huntsville Air and Space Museum and camp there as it has a small inexpensive FHU campground on site. http://www.spacecamp.com/travel/rvpark
We stayed there for a couple nights this fall and enjoyed the museum and a nice break for a couple days.

The area around Fort Payne is lovely and interesting. DeSoto Falls State Park has full hookups. Mentone always has something going on.

We also stopped at Nashville on the trip we did Huntsville too and hit the Grand Ole Opry as something different to do. Also downtown Nashville is a fund day or two visit checking out the honkey tonks, shops, etc and the Country Music Museum if that interests you. We stayed in one of the campgrounds just down the street from the Opry. You can hit the Corvette Museum and Factory Tour in Bowling Green KY and Mammoth Caves too just north of that.

We also enjoyed a trip o the southern part of IL last spring hitting the Garden of the Gods region for a week.

If you want to see the Corvette factory tour, you must book it a week in advance or so. I used to own a 'vette and wanted to go, but didn't know about the advance booking. Went to the Museum tho (before the sink hole swallowed up a few cars 2 years ago). I am seeing the factory this summer if things work out.

Dick, we haven't traveled the I-75 route through Atlanta for years, we always go back and forth through Alabama. When we head out this year the end of April we are staying at Lazy Days (Tampa) for just one night, then the second night Troy, then the third night Clarksville, then for us we can make it to our central Illinois destination that next day. You of course would have a pretty long run from Clarksville to Winthrop Harbor.

We have always stayed at Deer Run RV Park just north of Troy. They are extremely nice folks and it is inexpensive. They have a nice quiet CG with long pull thru sites. Troy is a nice clean town with many restaurants and shops.

We are pretty much locked into using Clarksville RV for that last night. They are priced in just under $40 if I recall but it is a clean CG with nice long pull thru sites also. There are tons of stuff to do in Clarksville. We have actually stayed there a week before.

US Rt. 231 is about 99% 4-lane divided and most of it has been resurfaced in the past few years, a very nice stretch of road. I-65 is no better or worse than I-75, maybe slightly less traffic. Good luck with your route planning and safe travels.
