Power Cord

The black outer covering of my power cord is pulled out of the yellow plug about 1 inch as though the coating has shrunk, exposing the individual wire coating. no bare wires are exposed. I see no way to disassemble the (female end) plug for repair. Has anyone done this? It doesn't appear to be molded on.

My original plug (cord) did the same thing. I ended up getting a new (male) end and put it on. The new one pulled out also. I ended up buying a whole new cord as a back up for when the original would finally fail. I taped up the separation with about 50 (exaggeration for sure) layers of black electrical tape and just keep using it. I've never plugged in the new one.

My suggestion, tape, tape, and tape the cord back to the plug and keep using it. Meanwhile, you might pick up another end so if it finally pulls apart, you can fix it on the spot.

Mine pulled out and is easy to repair. If I remember correctly you loosen the two or three screws on the face of the plug. This allows the yellow cover to slide down the power cable. There is a saddle clamp to hold the black sheath of the cord in place. Loosen the two screws on the saddle clamp, work the black sheath back up the cord. Tighten the saddle clamp screws. While you have the yellow cover off might as well inspect the inners of your plug and tighten the lugs for the four leads of your power cord. Mind you that is how it is on my dinosaur 2006 but doubt that has changed much in newer models.

This was (is?) a common problem. It will occur again unless you get a cord with a 90 degree plug or buy an adapter such as this:

They are available at Amazon and others suppliers. LINK

I have fixed mine by loosening the clamp holding the covering, working the covering back toward the problem end, and wrapping the end with some stretchy plastic tape that sticks to itself. Once I worked the taped end under the clamp, I tightened it down. Ideally, you can create a slight ridge on the covering with tape, so the clamp can help prevent the cover from sliding out from under the covering. Also agree with others, if you can purchase a 90 degree adapter for the coach end, it really helps minimize the stress on the power cord, and its protective covering.

If it is a molded cover connector there is not much you can do other than tape. There are some special tapes other than standard electrical tape that I think are stronger and bind to themselves. But I have never used any of them. Otherwise it is cut off the connector and put a new one on. But I don’t know that any of those type are waterproof.

Plus one on what Carl n Susan said. The adapter was around $50 on Amazon, but it will save your cord which is about $130 to replace. Well worth it. BTW, if you replace your cord or just the end, they do make them with the 90 degree bend already in the cord or connection so you don't need the adapter.

Since most of the time we only have 30 amp power, we bought a 25 foot cord with a twist lock female 50 amp end to 30 amp male end. No more dealing with the anaconda cord.

Bought one of those also for when we stay at a 30 amp only park. That 50 gets heavier every year. And is real pain in cold weather.

I think the following is the tape you referred to:

Electrical Heat shrink wrap is a heat melted adhesive-backed polyolefin tape. Kable Kontrol adhesive heat shrink wrap tape is primarily used for repair of electrical cabling and in wire insulation applications. Heat Shrink tape is especially effective when wires cannot be disconnected, but has many other uses as well.

There are numerous sources - following is one

power cord

thanks for the many replies. After spending too much time trying to pry the yellow cover off, I went the tape route. It will likely last as long as I will.

I think you did the right thing with tape. My molded on End separated even less than yours but I was worried so I had to destroy it to free up the ends of the wires to install another aftermarket Plug. (The wires were still VERY solidly attached/molded in). Which I've already replaced once, since the screw on "fasteners" don't stay tight forever. Wish I had just taped it like you!

We have the 90 degree adapter when using the 50 amp cord which is almost never anymore.Used the 50 amp when in Arizona when it is hooked up for 3 months. It is too awkward on our shorter trips and use the 30 amp cord. Most state parks in Oregon are 30 amp.

Mine had no screws to remove for maintenance. Bought a new cord, then bought a new female end for $15 on Amazon and turned the old one into a 50 amp extension cord. Been to too many campgrounds where whoever installed the pedestal obviously never rv'd, or thinks all rigs have their power hookup in the middle.

I had the same issue on my previous toy hauler. I couldn’t get the plug apart either. Came up with an idea that i used a couple of times. My DW stood on the cord and i pulled on the the outer covering from way down the cord. Did a couple of times and the outer covering came al the way up into the plug. Needs to be warm, i don’t it would work cold. I didn't tape it, couldn't come up with a way to do it. Montana has a cord reel and at my age I wouldn't have any other way. Those cords are heavy.

I use the same adaptor as Carl N Susan. This takes the strain off the main cord when hooked up to the unit. The pressure is on the "L" shaped connection and not on the connecting end of the cord. The adaptor is the best item I have found to use for the cure of covering sliding back off the main cord at the female connection end of the cord.
