Passegers in trailer while driving

I have been told that if you have a two way radio that someone could be in the tailer while you are driving down the highway.

Is this true?
Does anyone do that?
Is it safe?
How is the ride?
Do you have to have certin set up on the trailer or the TV (supenison etc)?
Why would you do that?

I believe some states allow it, but most states don't. There may be a difference between a TT and a 5er, too. Several people on the forum have commented that it's not the most comfortable ride back there, in any case. I put my dogs in the 5er once. We monitored them with a baby monitor, and I didn't like what I heard. That was the last time.

In most rigs, there isn't enough room for someone to ride back there anyway, and there are no safety devices. I think I'd sum it all up by saying it's not a good idea, and I wouldn't want to be the person back there even if it were.

It is defiantly a no no in Canada, British Columbia anyway.

Legal or not I wouldn't do it.
It is not at all comfortable not to mention the safety issue.
As an experiment get in the trailer while someone drags it done the road. Besure they take a few turns and throw in a few sudden braking episodes. I promise you that you'll be using that 2 way to beg them to stop and let you out.

"Why would you do that?" Maybe as some form of punishment?????

Glen accidently turned the rig around with me inside and I can testify personally that you do NOT want to ride back there, not even for a short time. It was very uncomfortable and unstable.

It's bad enough in a motorhome to move around in back, but in a trailer I can hardly imagine...

jrgwdenner...thanks for the chuckle...I got a visual on that and it brought a smile to my face...

I stayed in back once while we moved from one campsite in a park just down a couple of spots. I sat on the steps and watched everything inside jiggle around. It's a wonder everything doesn't break. There is no way I would let a human stay there.

John, I like that avatar. Earlier this year when I drove my folks home from Arizona, I saw the same thing in my rear view. I only got a warning, thankfully.

If you scroll down you will see the states that allow and do not allow passengers in travel trailers and fifth wheels.

I would never let anyone ride in my fifth wheel... not even my enemy. On the open roads forum this subject comes up now and then and when it does folks post photos of what a trailer type RV looks like after a crash... a pile of big toothpicks with clothes and curtains mixed in. Some states allow passengers if they are wearing seat belts... OMG could you imagine being strapped in? Either way you would be dead.

I have three words to say about riding in the Montana or any other tows RV:
Don't Do IT!
If you ever saw what was left on a 5th wheel or even a motor home after an accident you would never consider it.

Once while Dano was fueling up the Dodge, I went into the Monty to make us some sandwiches so we could keep on driving. Well, when he got done, he pulled away from the pumps and over to the side. That was long enough for me to be in the Monty while moving! And we were only going about 2 miles an hour. No, definately not a good idea. Can't think of a reason why you would want to or need to.

I would like to ride back there for a short distance, like around an RV Park. For a short time I could just sit on the floor. I've heard lots of horror stories that the sounds you hear would make you wonder if the rig is coming apart. I would like to at least experience that for myself.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

We've always thought lying on the bed would be the only way to do this. Haven't tried it and don't want to but we've talked about it if one of us was really ill and we needed to travel.

I know of only one state for sure that allows it: Indiana. But it is definitely not recommended. Unlike Steve Reigle, I have no desire to experience it either.

Steve,

I'll just bet we could get someone to do you that favor in Goshen at the Rally, I'll pull that big ole rig of yours around the campground, won't even go fast!

Rode in the old TT once to the dump, 5 MPH, NOPE, not going there again. And, Steve, the sounds and creaking and groaning scared the beejeebies out of me, one reason my dogs and my computers and cameras do NOT ride in any rig, they go in the truck, period, no exceptions, NADDA!!!

How strongly can we say this without getting edited by the moderators??? THIS STRONG??? MORE??? MORE??? MORE????

OKKK, do you get the idea, we think it is a BAD BAD BAD BAD idea!

Calif allows it as long as you communication between the passenger and the driver. Not saying it is a good idea just wanted to clarify which states allow. Wonder why?????

If I or Lorraine were that ill I'd be finding a lot better alternative. Any ill person would be even more so after just a few miles back there.

You are probably right Glenn. Didn't say we were going to do it, just talked about it. I told Ed I'd rather curl up on the back seat of the TV.

And to comment on another of your posts....
