Making a 30 amp cord

So has anyone tried to buy the female end of a 50 amp cord and wired it with a 30 amp cord. It seems to me that most of the time I really don't need 50 amps and the cord is a pain to coil up particularly if it is cold.

What I thought I would do would be to get the recepticle that goes into the Monty and then wire it up with a 30 amp cord and use it when I didn't need a 50 amps.

From what I can see, and from what I used in the old motorhome, the only time I would really need 50 amps would be if I was running two AC units.

Thoughts on this?

This is what you are looking for to use with a standard 30A cord. Can be had for cheaper price if you look around.

Just checked some sites on the web. Camping World as a mid point has:
50 amp Marinco 6364CRV female connector $88.33
Cover for the above with black screw on ring $24.44

50 to co amp 12 inch adapter $94.44

50 to 30 amp 25 foot yellow adapter and cord $154.45

All prices are standard CW prices, not Club prices.

Looking at this and the price of the female connector on the web, the 25' adapter cable at $154.45 seems like a good price and no fuss connecting wires and connectors. Club price $139.00, so it almost pays to join.
Not an advertisement for CW, only used for a baseline.

I only carry a 30 amp cord. Don't really need 50. Used the 50 amp connector that came with the unit.

I tried to buy the 50/30 Amp bone locally here...I have the 30 amp extension and was going to reduce down within 18 inches... the guy wants $149...all I need is the twist in connector at the trailer...I have no need for the 50 amp either...next time south I will get one..

Fun Time RV (where I bought my Monty) has the 25' one for $134.95, comparable to CW. So that looks like a reasonable price. They have a 1' adapter for $102. I am still dragging my 50 amp around but I may give in and turn loose of some more money and get the 50/30 amp one. Is there no end?

The 50 amp twist lock connector alone is $119.95.

I bought the 50 amp female plug from Northern at this URL for $45 -
Northern Plug

I then used a #10 3-wire cable I had and bought a 3 prong 30a male plug and wired them up. You will need to grab a hold of the silver prong in the center of the 50a plug and remove it if your Montana socket doesn't have a hole in the middle to accept it. Also, on the 50a plug, use a short section of insulated #10 wire to jumper the two hot legs since you want the 30a connection to feed all of your Montana.

Sure is a lot nicer to drag that 30a cable around and get rid of the weight too.

I think a lot of us have done that, dump the 50 amp cord. Put a take the 50 amp end of of your factory cord and put it on a good 30 amp cord. I also keep a 30 to 50 adapter so to get more amps to the trailer and still only use the 30amp cord, #10 wire is rated for almost 40 amps. Trailer is protected because it is wired for 50 amps.

Like most of you I hate dragging that heavy 50 amp cord around but we frequently have 50 amp service and we try to stay far enough south that it isn't too hard to coil up, so for that price I'll just stick with what I have

In answer to the original question, I bought a 50A female plug for about $60. and discovered the you have to jumper somewhere because there are two hot legs. I sort of gave up while thinking about this and bought a short conversion cord and a 30A cord at CW so we could go camping. My plan now is to make up a new cord using 12G wire so I can plug into the carport outlet to keep the battery charged and maybe turn on a light. I don't want to leave my good 30A cord out all winter.

Go to an electrical supply house and buy the bulk cord 30 amp or 50 amp. They will cut the length you want. While you are there get the male and female ends and wire it up. Lots cheaper than CW. I think I have a 15 ft, 20ft, and a 30 ft. 50 amp cord that I made up this way.
Got it when we had the first diesel pusher.
Don't need it now but knowing us we may need it in the future. We certainly used it in some places.
