axles

Is 2005 the first year they changed the axles? We are debating between the 2004 and the 2005 3670rl I don't want to buy the 2004 (new) if I am going to have axle problems

Yes, but I am not exactly sure when, so check to make sure. The name "Dexter" should be embossed on the little rubber cap in the centre of the wheel. We did exactly the same thing and bought a new '05 3670RL fresh off the line. There are a lot of changes between 04 and 05, more than in any other model year that I have seen. The 05s seem to have inherited many of the features of the Big Sky models.

Good thinking - good choice!

Not everybody has has axle problems. Actually there are only a handfull of issues. I would not let the axles be a major factor in Your decision.

I have an 04 and I have no problems with my axels, my tires are running true and are wearing flat,

I have noticed that the newer 05's have 8 lugs insted of 6, I seemt to get the imperssion they have increased the weight load of units and that is all, they are still making the 04 axels. When they get serious and put disk brakes on all new trailers insted of magnets not as an option, I will feel they are making a good change and it would be for safety.

I have an older Montana and have not had any problems but the older models had a frame re-enforcement mod done on them. As I look at the additional steel, it seem to allow very little play for the axle to bend. However I could be wrong on this but it makes sense.

I have read in other forums the Dexters have bent in other brands so I guess time will tell. Stay with us on the forum for how the 2005's hold up after 20000 miles or so. Of course bent axles apply to most all of the trailers. I still have two original tires and lots of miles on them.

Re: axles at state inspection time. Do state inspections include axles or are the the inspections so cursory that an axle issue would be missed? Obviously have not had our first inspection so just curious. Thus far no noticeable problems--but then we don't have the miles a lot of you have been able to put on. We are keeping our eyes on them though.

I called up Keyston today and asked them about axel problems they said that the amount of problems is very low, with just a few. he also said that if there was a real problem with the AL-KO axels they ( Keystone ) would have sent out a letter to all Montana owners notifying us with instructions.
