50 amp to 30 amp adapter

I just received a 30 amp power cord to replace the 50 monster that came with the rig. What is the best way adapt the 50 amp female twist lock connection on the rig to the 30 amp cord? I have searched for dog bones to do it but they are $100 or more.

If I remove the female end on the 30 amp cord and replace it with a 50 amp, how do I wire it. I will have three wires going to a four wire receptical?

Thanks for your help.

I would go ahead and spring for one of these.

They are a pricey but once you have one you won't regret it. They are handy and easy to use with the 30 amp cords and they seem to hold together well over time.

I agree with Jolu, have had one of those for the past six years and it works great.

We use the one Jolu uses, we bought ours at Camping World.
We also use the 30 amp cord with the adpt to plug into our Honda 2000.
You can also use it with a 30 to 20 amp adpy to connect to a 20 amp cord
for power. It will be worth the money.

Buying a separate adapter would be better, because you might just run into when you need the cord the way you had it before you modified it. While adapters might be expensive initially they sure pay for themselves each time you need them.

That 50 amp twist lock is not cheap either. But if you buy one, just as bigmurf said, jumper the black hot wire to both hot pins on the 50 amp twist lock.
I bought a 25' 30 amp to 50 amp adapter cord from CW that had the 50 amp twist lock already on it. And it is so much easier to haul around when I don't need 50 amps. Especially when leaving early on cold mornings in the mountains.

Go the way Jolu says. Don't go to the trouble of changing a cord. You'll be sorry you did down the road sometime. The Tweety's price is very good. We even carry a spare.

Why would you change the size of your plug, your Monty was set up to run on a 50 amp plug, not a 30, if your 30 amp draw is more than the service is capable of handeling you will pop the fuse on the service tower, with all the electronics we have in out RV's now you dont need any spikes or low current draws.
I would go with the pigtail and leave the original alone.
There was a post a while back where a Air Hose reel was used for that heavy wire and I'm sure they even sell one for that purpose. Some of those big class A's have them.
I use a 50 to 30 when the service tower will not let me plug in the yellow 30 amp plug all the way. And excessive use caused me to pop the main braker in the monty which is not good.
Dragging that wire around can be a chore, in a way I'm glad I have a 30 amp but if I ever want to run a aditional air I'm SOL.

I have a pigtail, and it has worked great for 5 years now. I agree that you may need the 50 amp at some point, but 30 is all we have ever needed, and that 50 amp cord was like trying to coil a stick of rebar if it's cool at all. You will soon forget the price of the pigtail.

We use 50 amp most of the time. The only time we use 30 amps is at some of the rallies we go to at fairgrounds and 50 amp is not available. Everyone to their own of course but with all the electronics and power draws on these units I would rather have two 50 Amp legs and 100 amp service available rather than one leg and 30 amps total. This summer we have seen well over 30 amps drawn on our 50 amp service. Run a toaster and a coffee maker and you are pulling close to 20 amps.

We do have the 50 to 30 amp pig tail as well as two 25 foot 30 amp cords and a additional 20 feet of 50 amp cord. Those who do a lot of fair ground camping will know why.

We always use 50 amp when it it available. We use the 50 to 30 pigtail when only 30 amp is available.
When the 50 amp cord gets to heavy it will be time for me to stay home.

Best answer I've seen.
