2020 Montana 295RL (Awning Separation)

While sitting outside of our 4 month old 2020 Montana High Country 295RL, my better half looked up to see the main awning separating away from the camper. Appears the glue/apoxy didn’t cure all the way. Anyway, I reached out Keystone Customer Service to request the warranty process. I know many of you have the 295/294 RL, so I’ll keep this forum updated on our results. Pic’s attached...

Ours was the same way. It's held on with screws with butyl tape underneath. Ours were all stripped out. I put one size up stainless screws in and drew it up tight (tightened by hand). We're full timers so fixing it myself was easier than a warranty repair.

Same with us on our 2017. Bigger screws did the job for several years now.

Ours was actually worse, pulling away enough for my fat fingers to fit between the frame and side wall. Warranty repair was to put in larger screws, and more of them, then caulk the top of frame.

The correct fix for awning rear rail pulling away from the filon wall is to remove the self tapping junk screws one at a time and replace with Oscar rivets... it is what is called for by Dometic to install the rear rail in the first place..

OEM builders continue to use inadequate and cheap junk hardware.

The Oscar rivets will pull the rear rail strip snug against the butyl tape and you will never have issues again..

Or..keep sticking in screws that will not hold because there is nothing for the screw to bite into except the filon....

Or order a box of 50 from McMaster Carr ...which is what I did...

Interesting. I've never heard of Oscar Rivets. Is there an aluminum header or metal frame behind the wall that the rivet attaches to? Once installed, is a threaded screw put into the rivet? I found 3/16" by 1" oscar rivets online. Is this the correct size?

These are the Oscar rivets from McMaster Carr.. much more affordable then the six that are prepackaged by Dometic....

$16.99 for 6 pop rivets?! Any hardware store for MUCH less. Package of 50 at Lowes for $5.98.

They should be a metal anchor strip behind the filon. I would bet some over zealous guy with a screw gun just stripped most of the screws.

Like said, I would remove one at a time, drill out the hole larger than the new screw in the (rail only)and replace with larger stainless screws. Clean out the caulk on top and recaulk.

Had the same issue, I took out the #8 screws and installed #10 and added screws at each end of the awning. This is where it get the most abuse.

I did some research and they are not standard pop rivets. They're split so they expand.

Information gleaned from this thread is precisely what these forums should be all about. Thanks to everybody that contributed.

Like others... Today I learned what an Oscar Rivet is.

That's what ours was. Also instead of being even remotely perpendicular to the surface many were installed at a ridiculous angle and a few didn't even go through the predrilled hole in the rail.

Very sloppily done. I'll forgive cosmetic stuff for the sake of speed and competition but this ranks right up there with suspension bolts and lug nuts in terms of safety.

I can only imagine how dangerous an awning ripped off at 60 mph would be to other drivers. Keystone needs to get on top of this.

Many thanks for the great info. One of my awnings did the same and needs a fix. I'm keen on the rivet solution as opposed to the larger screw I think - just feels like a better option. And who doesn't need a new rivet tool!

Awning separation

Appreciate the notes on this topic. Sitting outside yesterday at Fort Fisher campground and looked up to see daylight between the awning and RV!! 2020 3790RD. Guess I’ll have a project for this weekend.
I’m not impressed with the construction standards on this newer model. Maybe we should have kept our 2012....Happy Camping!

Bob, I had the same problem on our 2019 3791RD. I most of the screws with oscar rivets after using over sized screws to draw the awning tight against the wall in a few spots. I'm pretty confident it shouldn't pull away again.
