Frozen Antifreeze? - Montana Owners Club

We are coming out of the second-coldest February on record in RI. I went into our RV that has been sitting under feet of snow on the roof and looking in the toilet, I saw that the pink antifreeze had frozen solid? This doesn't sound right but maybe it happens?

I've seen it slushy, but never frozen solid.

It will actually start to freeze at around 0 - 10 degrees F. The advantage of the RV antifreeze is that unlike water, it does not expand when it freezes, hence no damage results. I have been in -20 temps and use RV antifreeze in both the rig and our stern-drive boat and have never had damage. I think you will be okay.

Not sure if this is accurate, and not completely sure what it means, but I found this on a Google search:

What is the difference between freeze point and burst point of antifreezes?

A. The freeze point is the temperature of the solution where ice crystals will start to form in the solution and it will have difficulty flowing. This temperature is around +10° F with -50 RV Antifreeze. This temperature is not indicative of the winterizing protection. RVers need to be concerned about the burst protection. The burst point is the temperature where the solution will begin to expand and thus cause the pipes to burst. A unit winterized properly with -50 RV Antifreeze should show a freeze point of around +10° F, which indicates a burst protection of -50° F.

That is correct it does Freeze but does not expand!
So you should have no problem as long as you pumped out all the water when you pumping in the Pink

Rv anti freeze does freeze in sub zero temps. Been these done that.

Way back in 1972 I was stationed at Eilson AFB outside of Fairbanks. I had a 5 gallon bottle of Prestone antifreeze in the back of my old panel truck. That January it froze solid. I was told later that if you cut it with water it would not freeze. But at -40F, it was a brick!

I'm just north of you and I would have to dig my way to the door of the Montana. I'm sure I'd find the same thing you did. Thank you for your research. It would have given me a scare if I saw the anti-freeze frozen, too.

Sambam, you guys got some mega-snow! We ended up with the snowiest February on record so I'm guessing with the amounts you got, you must be at least close to a record?

Luckily, we have three weeks before we head to Sanibel Island. If we had leave now, I couldn't clear the turn out of my driveway because of the piles.

Boston was close to a record last I heard. My 86 year-old dad says he doesn't recall a winter with this much snow. We hope to get the Montana out for a weekend in late March. It's hard to imagine right now, but, as you know, things can change quickly here in New England.

Yeah, I'm guessing Oregon must be very nice territory throughout the year. Very temperate. To be honest RI winters aren't very severe for the most part. This is been an exceptionally cold February and snowy as well.

Living in New England has its ups and downs but we have some distinct advantages as well: we are only three hours and change from New York City, an hour from Boston, and only an hour and half from New Hampshire (three hours from the beautiful white mountains there); Maine is only about three hours away. These are beautiful places for different reasons and we try to go to them all at some point or other.

This past summer I was in North Carolina when someone at a store noticed my Rhode Island tags and asked me if it was true that I could drive through my state in two hours. I told him that in two hours I could drive to three different states from my state.

Learn something new every day. For example, today, I just learned that antifreeze, freezes! Huh? Next you're gonna tell me there are no such things as muffler bearings, exhaust grease, or brake shoe cleats and I can't use my Subaru pickup to tow my Montana. Forget global warming, this world is going to pot.
