Brake magnets

Took the trailer to have the wheel bearings repacked. Shop called the brakes have 40% left, but magnets need replacing for $900.00. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I'm wondering if magnets fail, or is the repair shop looking for extra revenue.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I'm taking ours in Wednesday for wheel bearings service and to check the magnets. My prodigy is starting to indicate a possible problem with one or more of ours. I was quoted $275 plus cost for magnets themselves. It's a local RV repair place.

$900 ?! These people are really proud of their work or the Canadian dollar has really went down in value. You can buy the whole assembly the back plate, pads, magnets and all for $48 US. You just bolt it on hook up the wire and adjust the pads.

David ... I can't believe they looked you straight in the face and quoted that price?????????? Like said, you can buy the entire brake assembly (backing plate shoes, magnet, all assembled and ready to bolt on for @$60 each wheel. Here's a RH assy example. https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Bra...er/23-459.html It's a simple install ... 1 spindle nut, 5 bolts, and two wires after the wheel and tire are removed. In my neck of the woods ... a bearing repack including seals is @$100 for both axles. Keep looking ..........
Dave ... as for the magnets themselves ... Dexter replacement magnets go for about $30 online. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dexter-Trail...-/140509349664. As you can see buying the whole backing plate assembly if you also need shoes is the way to go.

The magnets do wear, but a complete back plate, brake pads and magnet assembly from eTrailer for our Montana was $65. A set of brake pads was $50, so you know I bought the whole thing for all four wheels.
