Lug nut socket size

I keep timing out when I do a search so I'll have to ask as we can't find the info in the books. What size socket do you need for the lug nuts? I suppose they;re all the same but we have an '05 3400. 5/16 is too small and 1" is too large. Does it take a metric sized socket?

13/16ths or 21mm; 13/16ths is REAL snug on mine so I actually went up to a 22mm. Be sure to use a heavy duty socket as well (I use one for air-impact tool). I originally used a regular duty socket but local Dodge dealer told me that they could break at the torques we need and suggested I purchase heavier duty ones for safety.

I've been putting off posting on this thread until I double checked the rig...did that today. My 07 3400 takes a 7/8" socket, the 13/16" won't go on at all. Don't know why, but they must have increased the size.

Cat320's post made me think so I went out and checked; My ole cougar used 13/16ths, my mountaineer uses 7/8ths (actually the metric I wrote about above). Now I remember the trouble I went through just after getting the Mountaineer. Couldn't understand why the different size lugs; cougar had 15 inch wheels, mountaineer has 16 inch wheels.

I use a 4 way lug wrench to keep mine checked and it has a 13/16s that fits perfect.

Not too sure about the Monties, but the Mountaineers changed axle suppliers (a larger weight rating) toward the end of the '06 run and for the '07s. That could explain the different lug sizes.
