Marathon China Bombs

Is there a Marathon China Bomb club, cause I should probably join up#128540;! Here's my story: We bought a 2014 3582RL from CW in Myrtle Beach in May/2016. I told the salesman at the time that the Marathon tires were junk, (should have made him take them off). We towed the rig 150 miles and parked it for 2 months while doing volunteer work. I did my research and decided on the Sailuns, so I ordered them and had them delivered to a Fayetteville, NC tire store for installation on July 1, 2016. Finished our work early, so decided to pull the rig to Charleston, SC, for a few days before heading up to Fayetteville, BIG MISTAKE!!! We got within 30 miles of our campsite when the bomb went off#128545;, including all the typical damage you read about.

After waiting 3 hours to get tire changed and rig duct taped back together, we limped on towards our destination, only to have our TST monitoring alarm go off with a slow leaker. We stop 6 miles from the CG and find another tire disintegrating before our eyes, exposing the steel belts!! As the air keeps slowily leaking, I call a tire store that is .4 miles away and closes in 43 minutes. We get the rig there in time to have another tire put on, ($190), so that we can get the rig to our CG, now only 5.5 miles away.

End of this long story is that I drove to Fayetteville and picked up the (5) new tires and a tire store is coming over today, 6/30/16, to install our new Sailuns.

Now, back to the club, what are the yearly dues#128077;#127996;#128526;

If you have Marathons be warned. This could happen to you. You can use your magic formula to prevent blowouts drive 62 mph inflate to 79 psi but the only way to prevent this is to get rid of the China Bombs.

I have a similar story posted somewhere here from last year. I also tried to make the dealer take the Marathons off and they praised them to the heavens. Well, it went from heaven to hell pretty quickly. Two blowouts and damages. Long story short, I went to the G series tires and have been very happy since.

By the way, I was given some good advice here to contact Goodyear and see if they would reimburse me for some of the damages. I documented and photographed everything well and when I supplied it to them I was given a very nice check to absorb some of the costs.

Quite frankly, ST tires should be illegal on our rigs!

I've had $4K in damage caused by their failures in the past. On my current Monte it happened a few miles after I checked every tire at a fuel stop.

I immediately purchased 4 LT tires. That was in 2013. Since then I've put on 10's of thousand of miles without a single incident.

Never buy a rig with ST tires. Make the dealer replace them with LT tires before you take it off the lot. You'll thank me for that advice.

I too documented my damages from my Marathon blowout, kept the tire and they had it sent to Goodyear, in the end they covered all of the damage caused to the trailer and the cost of the replacement tire. So it is certainly worth contacting them to see what they will do.

Wow, thanks for all your posts. I still have both tires, one that completely blew up and the second one that has all the steel belts sticking through the sidewalls. Who did you contact with Goodyear?

I just googled their site. You'll see an area that says something like complaints or customer service. It's a bit of a headache to do all the documentation and photographing but we got almost $1000 back.

Here's the number to call
1 (800) 321-2136

To use emoticons here you have to post then edit and you'll get the option. Once someone else has posted you can click "reply to topic" instead of using the blank at the bottom of the posts then you'll have your choice and can cause whatever problems you wish

Never did understand why the original tires on just about any camper should be designated as just delivery tires and to be up graded as soon as possible. But that would be admitting to something at the Manufacture and Dealer level. I changed out to Sailuns soon after I got my unit home.

My campsite neighbor had a blowout on his ST tires on his way here and did a little damage. I gave him the benefit of the knowledge I learned here a long time ago about tires. Didn’t come off as a “know it all”, but gave some useful info about what tires to get. His plan was to get another ST type tire as a replacement. He instead, went with the Firestone LT tires so he wouldn’t have to buy new wheels if he went with the G rated tires from Goodyear. He said it was expensive to buy 4 tires, but the peace of mind would be worth it.

You see so many blowouts on campers and the owners don't have a clue as to why. It's good he would listen most won't. They think whatever came on their camper is what should be on it and they are not going to change.

Bought my rig on Thursday. Stayed at the dealers doing upgrades till Saturday morning. Towed the rig about 5 miles to a Discount Tire Store and replaced all the tires. Then towed it 2000 miles back home never thinking about the tires. Sence then I have towed it about 18,000 miles without a tire problem. They will be replaced at the 5 year mark no matter how good they may look. I protect an $65,000.00 rig with $1,800.00 in tires to me that makes prefect sence. JMHO

I have the lightest Montana 2013 285rld. I left the China bombs on for 1 yr. They started to go bad.
I can't imagine what the heavier trailers do to those tires.
Replaced them with Michelin's. After 2yrs, they still look new.

Just got back from a 400 mile round trip. I noticed that 2 of my tires are seperating, no blowouts yet thank goodness! Anyway Im going tsouth this weekend. Im only able to get 2 kinds of tires delivered to my local tire shop before this weekend. I opted for supercargo st radials. They are 14 ply "G" rated tires and are comparable in price to Sailuns. Anyone had any experience with these tires? Id love to get g624's but cant affort $350 a tire right now.
