Island Kitchen

hello....I have a 2020 Montana Highcountry with an island kitchen. In the last few weeks, I can't walk through my kitchen without the whole island area shaking. Does this sound normal?

Sherri it shouldn't be but I believe it is normal from everything I've read and those I've talked to. My last Cougar High Country was rock solid but this one shakes all over the place. You don't want to fill a cup of coffee, sit it on the island then walk by unless you have a roll of paper towels. I believe it is the type of floor construction that has changed which in turn made the floor itself less solid.

Thank you so much for responding. I had a feeling that maybe this was the case, but before I called to ask, I wanted to see if it was normal or not. I'm very new to RV living and I love it. It's just that I paid a lot of money for this, and sometimes it seems as though there have just been too many issues.

Interesting, we haven't had that issue in our HC. The sloppy floor inside the dining slide is a trampoline...nothing is safe on the table. But the island has been pretty solid.

SherriPayne, NO, it is NOT "normal". We have a 2020 295RL, which has an island, and it's rock solid. If your unit is still under warranty, you should have that issue looked in to.

thank you so much for responding. I've had mixed advice, but I am going to have a tech person come out and give me some advice before everything is out of warranty.

Clean out under the island and see if there are any water leaks. Might be able to see where/if the island is loose of there is a floor issue. I had one island loosen up, it was poorly attached.

Good chatting with you.

The High Country models have a different floor construction. They have a laminated Styrofoam floor, and the Montana has a waterproof OSB one piece floor, with the heated underbelly. Our Montana shakes a little too.

Sherri- Since your HC is a 2020, it should be under warranty yet and I would take it into your dealer and have them check it out. They should be able to do something with it to make it more solid.

Sherri, thought I might make a couple of clarifying comments to my original post.

First make sure the island itself is secure to the floor - mine is but yours may not be. Make sure you are leveled and jacks down - that will help. Another thing is putting x chocks between your tires. Even if you are level with jacks down you can still get some "wiggle" from the tires when you are sitting right above them.

After that we're back to the floor construction which does flex. I'm hoping it bodes well for longevity but we'll see. If you think it has too much movement take it back to the dealer if it's still under warranty....just be prepared to have it gone a while until they get to it. Good luck.

If the floor in your HC is like mine it’s a laminate 2 pieces of 7/16 OSB with 2 inches of white styrofoam between them. It is a very strong flood and energy efficient but OSB doesn’t like water. It will get soft if it is soaked for very long. Your island should not move much if it’s anchored correctly. If the floor is weak it should be a fairly straight forward fix. Take the island up and the flooring cut the top layer of OSB. Take it out and glue another piece in place.

The islands are not fastened all that well, but the issue can be solved by using one or more of the devices used to reduce shaking in the RV. X chocks, strongarm and probably more. If this is new then your last levelling did something different than before, you might want to start there.
