Mount Rushmore Area
Would like some recomendations for a great campground to use in the Rushmore area as a base for exploring the area, we are at Badlands now for a few days .It doesn't need to be huge, just easy to navagate to & homey. Thank you for any help.

Butch & Zaida,
We stayed at the Rafter Bar J or something similar. It's been several years since we stayed there but it is a huge and very spread out park. It made an excellent "jumping off" point for the varied scenery in the area. The Park is sort of on the $$$ side. But in spite of that we would stay there again
There are a 'ton' of parks in the area so check the campground books. We had some friends stay at a relatively small park about 3 miles south of Hill City. They were just barely able to get the Monty into their site. They were not real happy with the park but it was more reasonable than the Rafter Bar J.
Enjoy your visit. Dennis

We stayed here and loved it
http://www.custersgulch.com/
They are right outside the entrance to Custer State Park and very close to all the other sites.
We met another Montana owner there who loved it so much they ended up staying for about 2 months! This year they decided to go back and be work campers so if you go there be sure and look up Mike and Leslie (Les), great folks.
Try to get towards the back of the property, more shade and the property behind the rig is all National Forest. We saw deer behind our site most every night. Very quiet and the sites are decent size.
Enjoy your trip!

We second Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hill City. Very nice park and the sites are huge. Yes it is pricey, but all in the area are. Only 3 miles from Hill City, if you go there be sure to have dinner at the Alpine Inn. Only one item on dinner menu small or large filet migon with salad etc and the desert menu is to DIE for and filet was $8.95-10.95 depending on size you order. It is very convient to Rushmore, Custer, Spearfish and is owned and operated by family. Have fun and don't rush there is SO much to see in the area.

We stayed at Ellsworth AFB Fam Camp. Cheap and adequate IF you have access to those places. A little farther to drive, but at $17.00 a night you can't beat it.....

We stayed a Rafter J a few years back and it was pretty nice. This year we will be at Flintstones Bedrock City RV Park with the grand kids at the end of June for a week.

Rushmore KOA looked very nice when we were there two years ago. That is provided you can get a reservation there!!! We stayed at a park between Custer and Crazy Horse Monument--stay up top is all I would say, if you book there.

we have stayed at Grace Cooledge Creek inside of Custer State Park many times when we lived in western Nebraska. Buffalo walked through the site with not a care in the world. Several different sites within the park itself.

Butch & Zaida,
Have fun at the "Gulch" wish we were back there to welcome you, we loved the place. Look for Mike and Les and tell them "hi" from Phil and Rudee.

We enjoyed Custer State park very much. We plan on visiting the area this fall. Maybe even work camp for a month. Then head south. We try and stay at State Parks if we can.

There is a place called Hart Ranch Resort that is a beautiful RV resort just 9 miles south of Rapid City. Are there any other members to this place out there.
