RV5 Extended King Pin

Has anyone had any experience with the RV5 Extended King Pin? The advertisement in the Highways magazine lists the website as www.popuphitch.com and says it adds 10" more clearance between the truck and trailer for more trailer swing.

Barbara,

I do not have any experience with those, but caution you that any extension to the pin box places additional stress to the overhead frame on the trailer. Keystone has went to a lot of redesign to reduce the length of the overhang to help eliminate some early frame stress issues.

Beware the geometry. The problem with shortbeds is not when they are pulling straight. The problem is in the turn. The way a pinbox extension can really help is if it is so long that the trailer misses theTV cab when the TV is turned 90 degrees to the trailer. In other words. The distance from the pin to the front of the trailer is more than half the width of the TV bed. If the distance is less than half bed width the calculation gets more complicated but if you draw out the dimensions to scale you can see the effect of the added length on your situation. The trick is to use the pin center as the reference point.
Try it -- its fun
Dave

PS I agree that the more serious problem is the change in the lever action on the frame. Could be a serious problem

Brad, thanks for the quick reply. We are just looking at various options. We may end up with a F350 long bed and won't have to worry about extended hitches. At least that's the option my DH likes.

Barbara,

We chose the short F350 so it would fit in the garage. We use a slider hitch. Any of the sliders will work, some even automatic, and it doesn't add any stress to the trailer.

Thanks to Brad I now have some insight as to why some folks buy shortbeds and then an expensive slider so they can tow safely. My TV won't fit in my garage at all so I never considered a shortbed. Thanks Brad

We have the orriginal extended hitch that came with our 2005 3475 Montana. Its in the back of my truck right now. We added the Mor/ryde hitch down here in Florida at the super show. the numbers are
RB1116 Lippert hitch. Don't know if it will fit on yours or not. If your interested send me a note.

Yes I use the king pin extender, it works just as they said, have had no trouble in turning with my short bed. It does put some strain on the trailer frame tho. I wish that Lippert would make a adapter kit for those of us that need it. I see a lot of rigs in our part of the country that pull with a gooseneck adapter, which is also a no-no to Lippert. If 20 to 25 percent of the people use something it tells me that they are not taking care of there customer base when they just scream that it will void your warranty.

If you use one watch the front frame, in two years mine is still working OK, and I've run 15 to 20 thousand miles with it.

I have the F-350 short bed with slider. This is my second short bed tv with slider. They work fine.
