Update: 6/13/12 Heading north

We are considering heading up Hwy 101 when we leave Vacaville CA 11 June. I was looking at crossing to Hwy 101 at Williams CA on Hwy 20. The question is Hwy 101 a slow winding road that far south and should we cross on Hwy 299 farther north to get to Hwy 101? Also how is Hwy 299 pulling the Monty?

06/13/12. We have arrived in Winchester,OR. We will be here until 06/17/12 when we depart for Portland. Right now Portland is an overnighter then on to Pendleton, OR, Boise ID, Idaho Falls. West Yellowstone and beyond.

Got it Jim

We came the other way. Down 101 to CA37 to 80. Good road all the way over to 101 and near where you are.
101 is great, views and quaint towns. Enjoy.

Jay,
I drive 20 to Williams frequently. We just took it on our way to 7 Feathers for the rally. It is a beautiful drive with no problems towing. You go though a few small towns around Clearlake (largest natural lake in California). That being said, depending on the time of day (traffic), I prefer Hwy 37 from Vallejo to Novato which also gets you to 101. Not quite as scenic, but it's an easy drive.

Thanks Wayne and Ken. The question is: How far do we go north on 101 before heading East to Yellowstone. We are looking at crossing over at Otis Oregon to Portland. Then take 84 east. Or would crossing over at Eugene and take Hwy 20 to 84. Recommendations.

George

Jay, if you go north you can come through NE and stop on your way home at the Central Plains Rally in July

Jay,
We came across from Glacier on rt 2 to Everett Wa. then crossed over and went around the Olympic Nat Park then down 101, so I am not much help on the way you are going. I do know 90 takes you close to Yellowstone but that is all the help I am.
Just pick one and go for it, That is a lot more exciting and which ever way you choose it will be beautiful trip.

Thanks Wayne. I think I have it now. You are right either way will be exciting. Just the traveling and seeing the country makes it worth while.

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
Are you just passing through Winchester, OR? You arrived and departed on the same day. You are starting to sound like a Japanese tourist that visits 8 countries in 6 days.

We went to the first day of the Oregon Chain Saw Sculpture Championship. The Oregon dunes and what a site to see all the Off the Highway Vechicles traveling over the dunes. The dunes themselves are impressive. More touring tomorrow.
