First, thanks to Jim and Lisa for setting this up last year (and this year). It will take some studying, but you have time to be ready to take the tests by rally time. I am sure many of you have the same thoughts as I did last year - do I need to learn Morse Code, is it hard, what does it cost to get started? First, they eliminated the Morse Code test requirement years ago. YouTube videos, ARRL study guides (Technician, General and Extra) are on Amazon and free online practice tests are good ways to study. The testing is free at rally. At Quartzsite last year, it was $14 each time you took the test. At rally, you can take the test over if necessary (I had to take my General a second time). Once you pass the test, it costs $35 to register with the FCC. You will get your call sign then and qualify as a new license holder for a deal on a radio and software for $20.
Why get my Ham license? I got mine because we camp in remote areas without cell coverage, I have constant communication availability and I wanted to help with Emergency Communications. During wildfires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters your local Emergency Management agencies mobilize volunteer ham operators for communication when cell and landline infrastructure is damaged. Ham radio has so many facets that you cannot even imagine.
Other than some study time, it is absolutely free to take any of the tests. You must pass them in order. All three - Technician, General and Extra Class will be offered. Last year this time, I was studying. This year, I have the privilege of being on the test team. Looking forward to seeing you at Rally. Just another reason to attend this gathering of Montana owners in Goshen.
