I think your spring has some problems too.

Another thought is whether the spring was rewound properly when replacing the topper. I have removed the end of the topper with the spring - carefully and unloading the spring when doing so, to service (inspect and lubricate) the spring. There are a certain number of rotations to the spring to ensure it picks up the material as the slide is brought in. In essence, the spring loads up when the slide is moved out, and then releases the load as the slide is brought in to pick-up the fabric.

But, if there are terrible noises, then there is a spring issue, it could be rubbing inside the housing - clean the housing and lubricate the spring. It could be a broken spring.
