Starting the 2 year countdown to FT

Things are getting real now as I look around the house and try to imagine how much stuff we have and the 'what do we absolutely need" project. We downsized once from 3,200 to 2,000 and had to get rid of lots of stuff but the task of getting down to a 5er will really tax our marriage concerning what is needed and what is not. OMG, this will be a real trial.
How did others do this?

Pick the thing you want most (in my case a 74 CJ 5) and sell it first. The rest is easy.

When we sold the hose and built a RV home base we included a storage shed for the things we just couldn't part with. I strongly recommend renting a storage room or some similar thing in the beginning to help with smoothing the marriage issues as well as giving you time to decide what you really want to save. We have moved things from the rig to storage and from storage to the rig every year we've full timed. Where we're going and how we've refined our lifestyle make that a thing we do once a year.

When we did it, we decided NO yard sales, NO Craigs list, NO other selling things. Called all the kids, got rid of all the furniture and excess housewares. We put tools and DW's sewing excess and things we decided we would want at some time in the future when/if we stop fulltiming. We made the decision to fulltime in July 2012, drove away from the sold and empty house the middle of November 2012. Unless something has sentimental value, or is otherwise not replaceable, put it in storage, otherwise, it's just things. When we did the drive away from the house the last time, it felt like the weight of the world had been lifted from out shoulders. Once you get started, it will be easier. Good luck.

We couldn't agree on how much to get rid of either. Because of not getting rid of enough stuff we kept 2 storage sheds for almost a full year of full timing. Then we started adding up what that was going to cost over a 5 year period and all of a sudden we could easily get rid of enough stuff to get down to one storage shed.

There are some things we will never part with. Old photos, keepsakes, extra seasonal clothing, and just misc stuff. To make room in a 10x30 foot storage shed for these items, plus our extra vehicle, I built a free standing loft in the back. We can have boxes actually stacked up floor to ceiling and somewhat organized. But the whole thing was a process. It was hard to go from 3,000 square feet to about 300.

Even though we are just coming up on 2 years of this lifestyle, we would not go back for anything!

I'm with Dick. We have been FT for nearly a year and a half. We got the storage unit and trade out between seasons. We are now also realizing that much of what we have stored won't ever be needed, so we will get ready to donate further and downsize on the size of the unit.

Rented a 10'x10' climate controlled storage for things to keep (it's only half full), had a estate sale outfit sell everything out of the house, sold the house and never looked back. Best decision we ever made.
