Always take the rock out of your shoe!

Joyce and I spent the day yesterday rooting around old gold mines and getting some great pictures in the mountains. As we were climbing down the last mountain we were on I got a rock in my shoe on my left foot. Mentioned it to Joyce, but we were so entranced with the mountain views that we never looked at the shoe and I figured I'd get it out when we got home. Got home and sat down in the rig and there on my shoe was a 3" long cactus. Good thing I didn't rub my foot on the wall of the truck on the way home! Here's some of the views that distracted us: http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums/.../Gold%20Mines/

Be very happy that baby did not jump on your body. I hear they are nasty to dig out and hurt like *&$@

I think they are called Cholla Cactus (pronounced "Choya"). I've seen these all over the California southern deserts too. In fact, there is a self-guided walking tour in Joshua Tree National Monument through a forest of them and there are some pretty big ones in that area.

The spines are wicked sharp and "aggressive". IIRC if you get close it seems that they will just about jump out at you to stick on for a free ride to drop their seeds along the paths traveled. It sounds like you and Ozz were the latest victims - Ozz posted some pictures in another topic of Cholla attached to their shoes. I am always very careful around this plant.

Too bad it wasn’t a gold nugget when you took off your shoe! Nice pictures, I saved a few of them for background pictures on my monitors.

I've been getting some great pictures out here. I use them to make note cards and post cards and occasionally sell them. We went to the Grand Canyon the other day and happened to get there when a snow storm was coming in from across the Canyon. Got some really great pictures that day. I could post them if anyone is interested.

I think you are getting 'Bit' by the same Arizona bug that bit us. We just love it here.
See you later this morning for our next great adventure. (I still have some spines in my boot..)

Our neighbors have warned us about those. When we are in the BLM land behind us exploring with the side by sides we always stay clear of those little buggers.

Jim, there's still a whole lot of Arizona for you to see! That state has a huge variety of terrain and things to see and do. Like snow skiing in the winter, just north of Tucson. Or Flagstaff. Or Show Low. Etc.
