air conditioner cover

Has anyone tried using one of the air conditioner covers during cold weather to help keep the heat in and the cold out?
Thanks,
Don

It can't hurt but I wouldn't use one without also putting a cover at the down spout of the A/C or some else to remind me to remove the A/C cover if I turn on the A/C and forget the cover is in position. I don't think the blower would like it if it tried to bring in some air and the inlets are completely blocked by the cover. For this reason maybe it's better trying to keep the cold weather out from the inside of the A/C rather than a cover on the outside that could be easy to forget about.

As a second thought, the covers are intended for long term storage and to keep debris out and aren't typically insulated and there could be a lot of unnecessary climbing on the roof to remove the cover in case the weather turned warm during the day. This happens in desert weather where the days get warm enough to run the A/C then freezing cold at night.

Whatever you want to do, just be aware of the possibilities (always cold, hot & cold) and your location's temperament and make your decision based on that.

Whatever you do, it would be nice of you to share it with us, so we understand your solution or clever techniques to prevent some of the problems I mentioned.

I don't think you would gain much comfort, unless you build a box with 3 or 4" insulation around it. A cover would not do anything much.

I have seen a number of people use the "box" idea as a means of providing more insulation around A/C units. I would be a bit concerned doing this because of the possibility of the box moving around in heavy wind an tearing up the rubber roof.

We used one before we went full time but I wouldn't recommend it. It does nothing more than prevent snow and other debris from getting inside the unit. Save your money.

Thanks for your input. I think I will do something on the inside as suggested.

Don, we used a cover on our A/C during 2 winters in the Chicago area. Just an extra layer.
