Pin Weight

Hello All
I have a 2007 Big Sky and wonderning if another Big Sky onwer has got on a scale and checked to see what there pin weight is. I know it can vary according to the load in the camper but I am just looking for a average weight. I am pulling mine with a 2007 classic 2500 4x4 diesel and the best I can figure max weight for is is about 2200 Lbs.I was also looking for the dry weight of the trailer and cant find that on it anywhere. Any help there would be apperiated with that also.

To complete the cross reference, the shipping weight is the same as dry weight and is also called curb weight.

The pin weights are listed as Hitch weight which are 2105, 1965 & 2010. These are typically calculated between 15% and 25%. Keep in mind these are pin weights of an empty trailer and probably at the low end of the potential pin weight. If you want to calculate the average pin weight multiply the Gross Trailer Weight Rating and multiply times 19% which is the weight of the pin when it's loaded when 15% to 25% is expected. Therefore for the three models listed, the pin weights would be 2,965 for model 340RLQ, 2,938 for model 350RLQ and 2,947 for a 360REQ, or an average of 2,950 lbs.

One way to lighten pin weight is store items directly over the axles or in the back of the trailer. This will lighten the pin weight. Don't go so far as to make the trailer carry too much over the tires but it will be a balancing act with a 3/4 ton vehicle and even worse because tow weight is lessened with a 4x4 versus 4x2. My Monty has about 2,600lbs over the pin and I have some weight rating to spare in the rear of the rig if I was worried and since my Monty is somewhat below GTWR and Axle weight ratings.

The pinweights on that site are, if I understand correctly, estimates. And they're notoriously low. You should figure a few hundred more pounds for actual pinweight when empty and more yet when loaded. For example, the pinweight shown on the Montana site for our 2007 Montana 3400RL is 2,000 lbs. We do run a bit heavy but our actual scaled pinweight is 2,900 lbs. Our prior Montana, a 2003 3295RK was listed at 2,300 lbs. Our actual scaled pinweight, loaded, was 3,300 lbs. As noted, we run heavy so most will be a little less heavy but a few will match or exceed our numbers.

That's for sure...manufacturers make them low so you think you can tow with a 3/4 ton and will buy that RV. Truth be told ACTUAL pin weights are at least 20% and sometimes 25% of the GW of the RV.

Works for me! I suspect the vehicle engineers and lawyers understated max weight limits by 15 to 20 %.
Never kicked a grunt off coming out of a hot LZ because we might be 200lbs overweight.

We have the 06 3400 and probably run as heavy as Steve R. Our measured pin weight was 2915lbs.
