older stud post gooseneck style hitch

Hey everyone! My Dh and I looked at a truck today that had a gooseneck style hitch in the bed, except the ball is a stud post and the trailer they used had a hitch that was a V and clamped around the stud post. Does anyone know what type of hitch set up this is? It's almost like a big rigs hitch in reverse? Afraid this might be too much to convert back over to a fifth wheel but thought it was worth investigating.

Sounds like you may have discovered the "Mother" of all hitch inventions! HA! Most late model fivers frames aren't really designed for a gooseneck hitch although some people pull with them as they also have horses whose trailer hitch is a gooseneck. I'd think it would be easy to remove the "invention" and just install a regular fifth wheel hitch ... unless it's all welded in ....

Our truck had the heavy duty gooseneck hitch when we bought it. However, we had it taken out and a 5th wheel put in by the dealer where we bought our 5er. They had to put in a piece of diamond metal after they took out the gooseneck to cover a whole that was left. But, it looks nice and they even saved our bedliner.

Now, it was the salesman that said it would be no problem but their maintenance department didn't want to do it and tried to talk us out of it. But, that's the reason we wanted the 5er - for the ease of connecting and disconnecting so we stood firm the the fact that we wanted a fifthwheel hitch and the salesman told us you would do it.

So they did it and it looks and works very well. We're glad we stood firm. Our RV was two years old and had been traded in on a MH so then they told us they had the hitch they had taken off the previous owners truck and we could buy that at a much lower price. So, we did, and it turned out to be an "Air Box" w/Husky hitch. So we got an air hitch out of the deal and combined with our Mor Ryde Suspension and trailer hitch pulls like an angel.

It would help to have a picture of what you are describing. However, there are fifth wheel hitches that anchor into a goose neck hitch. Example: B&W makes a turnover ball hitch that when combined with the B&W Companion Hitch provides and excellent goose neck and an excellent fifth wheel hitch. I have the B&W Companion Hitch in conjunction with the Turnover Ball hitch. It has been a very stable and effective hitch for the three years I have used it.

We have been able to find out the set up is called a inverted fifth wheel hitch and is popular with guys who haul race trailers. The hitch is rated to two 34,000 lbs. We haven't ruled the truck out, but not sure we want to tackle converting the hitch set up to the standard fifth wheel. It my entail pulling the bed off due to how the conversion company installed it. Will have a BIG hole in the bed that we will have to have a piece welded onto. Truck is really clean though. 99 Ford F350 with the 7.3. Only 82k miles and they did the tranny at 71k. Runs really nice..IDK..it's always something.
