rear brakes

I am in the process of replacing the rotors and pads on my Sierra. My question is: is American-made rotors the "only" way to go to get good quality, or has someone had good experience with import aftermarket rotors, such as Centric or the ones from Advance, Auto Zone, Napa etc? thanks for all replies, Jim

My understanding is that most brake rotors are made out of country anymore. But there is difference in quality. Meaning that when you go to the parts store, they will usually give you two different prices. I always go with the more expensive because the quality and warranty is always better.

I personaly like the rotors from Napa myself. Personal choice is up to you.

Ford replaced my rotors under warranty and they were made in mexico. They only lasted two years and started shaking. Bought another set and they are from china and now they are starting to shake. Really is depressing, even when I want usa made can't find them.

I'm not sure what you mean by shaking, but if a problem like this keeps repeating itself like yours is, it's an indication that something else isn't right, like maybe a caliper problems. I would go to a place that specializes in brake repair and ask them. Make sure you tell them you pull a fifth wheel too. Rear brakes do a relatively minor percentage of the total braking and usually outlast the front brakes by a large margin.

I should of explained, they were my front rotors, and the biggest problem I have is due to the truck sitting during the winter for days and what happens is the metallic in the brake pads start to rust the rotors which cause hard spots. But since these rotors are made so cheaply, no one will turn them to true them up,so you end up replacing them. My son is a service advisor at a ford dealership so the calipers and system has been checked out.

Well, I found Raybestos rotors at a local supplier, we deal with at work, at a reasonable price. I failed to mention that the old rotors, which I don't know if they are OEM, have metal flaking off of them on the pad mating surface. I will post some pictures. I was told this has been a problem with the GM's in some cases. Thanks for all the interest. Jim
