Auxilary Fuel Tank?

Anyone use one? How much does a gallon of diesel weigh? Aside from the extra weight from the fuel those tool box/tank combos seem to be pretty cool. It would be nice to not to have to worry about rolling up to a pump with the trailer in tow.

I have a 45 Gal auxiliary tank. It allows me to shop for the best fuel price along the way not to mention there is a comfort level with having the extra fuel. Some folks get along just fine without an auxiliary tank. Many times when I pull over for lunch I will turn the auxiliary tank on and top off the main tank or add enough fuel to carry me the rest of the day without stopping to fuel up. I would not consider any of the tanks cheap, but I think they are worth having.
Diesel is a little over 7 lbs per gal. I guess it depends on the grade. Number 2 might weigh a little more.

Diesel weighs about 7.3 lbs per gallon. I've read Gasoline weighs even less and is different depending on the grade. I suppose this means that differing diesel grades could weigh less the more refined it is. All I know is that water weighs about 8.3 lbs which explains why oil based fuels float on water.

I recall from prior threads, there are many members who have auxialiary tanks. I'm sure they'll be along shortly to post.

I have a 45 gal fuel tank that is manufactured by Transfer Flow, Inc. I picked mine up directly from the manufacturer in Chico Ca, but they have installers throughout the country. The 45 gal tank I have was installed in the same place that the original 26 gal tank was in, and it is one of the best investments that I made.

I have a 56 gal Transfer Flow tank that replaced the OEM tank. My 34 gal tank always seemed to drop below 1/4 tank as I was about 50-80 miles from destination. I try dearly not to fuel with trailer attached. I do not like maneurving around a fuel stop, be it truck or not. The exception was on the turnpikes out east, pretty easy in and out.......The TF tanks are expensive but worth the cost to me. I still have a full tool box in the truck to be used.....BTW 56 gals will get me wherever I want to go......

I thought long and hard about an auxiliary tank and in the end rejected the idea. Reasons were cost and practicality. We tend to stop every two hours for bathroom breaks, to stretch, or to eat, so when we do, I top of the tank if needed. for that reason, I couldn't see where the cost would be justified.

I also rejected the less expensive in bed transfer tanks because I couldn't afford to lose the storage room of the tool box we have that is crammed full of other stuff.

I have the 50/Gal transflo system and am happy with it.It depends on your needs if you want one.I snowbird every year and can go a long distance before requiring fuel. When I stop along the way I don't even unhook sometimes. When I do unhook I'll top off and go get something to eat or do a little shopping.

We have a 50 gal. aux. tank here and are very happy that we went this route. In total we now have 80+ gal and DO NOT have to fill up at any time while hooked on to the Monty. Our tank was custom made to sit below the sight level of the box, most people don't know its there at a glance. We have a very simple and inexpensive gravity flow system with a on/off valve tucked just behind the tank. Some people think the manual switch might be a pain but we stop every 2 1/2 hours or so the stretch our legs anyway. Total cost $800. Canadian installed.

They are really great if they fit your travel mode. Like TomS 3 or 4 hours behind the wheel is enough for us and finding fuel or maneuvering into a fuel station has never been a problem..a challenge perhaps..but not a problem. We did consider the extra tank but then decided it would be of no benefit....for us.. In the early days of the LSD to USLD fuel changover we thought we would need one.

Clemson1881,
I have a 50 gal Transfer Flow Tank with TRAC II readout. I got it through Rowells, Inc, Indian Trail, NC. They also do aftermarket upgrades on TVs. We have one because irt fits our needs. I love not having to stop for fuel until I want to. After almost running out on one of my trips I made the choice.

I have a 91 gal fuel tank tool box combo. When full with the truck tank it gives me 136 gallons to play with and gets me through some of the over taxed fuel states. I purchased mine from Northern Tool Supply. I keep track of diesel prices on the internet when on the road and watch for fuel price signs for the best deals.

I have 45 gallon transfer flow tank installed on GMC 2500. Best thing I have added to truck, not to start looking for convenient fuel stop every 225 miles. I can usually make next Flying J, easily, which I prefer for convenience.

I traveled with 2, 5 gallon cans in the back. Then one Sunday traveling on a 2 lane US highway and every station we passed either did not carry diesel or were closed. Finally the low fuel light came on but the road was being worked on an there was no shoulder to pull off on, to add diesel. Then we found a station and filled up with diesel after that I could not go forward because of the low overhang so i had the fun of backing out onto a busy highway. I will never again go through that because when I got home the first thing I did was order a combo tool box and fuel tank.

I have the same tank for the same reason. As stated, they are expensive, but worth it.

And, Clemson1881, you have enough truck to carry the extra fuel and not have a weight problem.

We have a custom built 55 gallon auxillary tank that is esily removed if needed and love the set up.
The top is built with a three inch tray for storage yet does not interfere with the box cover. We can pick and chose our fill up stations. Also if we want to make long runs without fueling, we can easily attain 1500 miles non towing and about a 1000 miles when towing.

I have a 55-gal aux tank/tool box combo. With the 34 gallons in the stock tank, I can pretty much choose the state I refuel in. That gives me at least 750 mile range and, if the wind is right, up to 1,000 miles.

I have a 120 gal. in bed tank. Takes up a lot of room, but with a full stock tank and this one, I'm good for about 1600 + miles, thus by passing high prices and bad locations. And, since my rig is primarily for towing the Monty, the space it takes up is not an issue.
