What's wrong with K&N air filters. I have been running them in everything I own from a hardcore Toyota Land Cruiser to my Chrysler PT Cruisers for the last 25 years or so with absolutley no problems.

This info on Fram filters is totally new to me. I've never heard anything bad about them until now. I appreciate the heads up. Thanks.

I'm a firm believer in using OEM filters. Just for example I just had all the filters, Oil (2ea),Fuel,Primary air filter and the in cab filter. I used only Freightliner OEM filters (Mercedes Engine) and Rotella 15/40 oil (7 Gals of oil). Total cost $259.42. You can go on line and save some money on OEM filters. For example the Primary air filter list cost was $102.56, I paid $68.37, Oil filter $20.94 my cost $18.21 and the centruge oil filter $54.56 my cost $47.91 and that was from Freightliner. However on the Frieghtliner the oil change interval is every 200 hrs of operations, I will change ever 20,000 miles or once each year. I recomend using OEM filters. GBY...

I now have a 2006 Dodge with 136k amd have always used fleetgard filters from Cummins. Fleetgard filters are around 13 to 15 dollars from from the cummins dealer. A prior post gave a web site you should investigate for fleetgard filters at better prices. You might try mopar branded filters from your Dodge dealer. The mopar, wix and fleetgard are all better choices than fram. The Rotella T is a great choice for oil. Use good oil and filters and the deisel will last many many trouble free miles.

I read a review on oil filters last year. They tested about every major brand and determined that Baldwin were the best. Wix was a good runner up. I think I remember them saying Baldwin were used in a lot of heavy equipment (trackhoes, dozers, large tractors). They also said Fram was pure junk. Ever since I have been using Baldwin in my 6.0 ford and cars. I buy them online by the case.

I sure have seen a lot of high prices listed in this forum for diesel oil changes. My dealer where I bought the 2006 Dodge charges $69.95 for a oil (Rotella) and filter change and I watch them do it.

tjuhl, please share the dealers name. I would like to leverage their prices against some of the KC Dodge Dealers.

Part of it is my Fords required 15 quarts of oil and my Dodge requires 12. Plus, I use synthetic, which is more costly but allows me to go twice as long between changes. I've paid everywhere from $45 (for the Dodge, non-synthetic prior to 30k miles, and Fram filter) to $90 (synthetic oil and Motorcraft filter at a Ford dealer). Also, the Ford filter meeting their specs (6.0L engine) originally was available only at Ford dealers for around $38 or at International dealers for (I think it was just under $30 if I recall correctly). Walmarts now carry the Motorcraft Ford filters for under $20. Add it all up and it's an expensive oil change. I was using Fram filters on the Dodge, for about $4 at Walmart. But after this thread I think I'll switch filter brands.
