Need some Info

I need some advise on gas mileage from anyone who drives a one ton dually. I am looking at upgrading my truck to a one ton from my F-250 diesel. I found a 2004 GMC Sierra, automatic,dually with a V-10 (gas) engine, 4X4 and 4:10 rear axle. Question is what kind of gas mileage can I expect empty and towing a 12000lb 5th wheel.

GMC did not make a V10 in 2004...could it have been the 8.1L V8?

I stand to be corrected yes it is a V-8, it was a Ford that I was looking at that had the V-10...Thanks for the clarification...

see our sig line, we have the 8.1 but not 4 X 4. Sorry, not sure of the rear end numbers, and Al is not around to ask,

mileage towing Tana, 7 to 8. windy days with head wind 5, down steep hills with tail wind 50, give or take!

We have a 2003 GMC 8.1 and it gets between 7-8 mpg regular towing and maybe 5.5 mpg on a rainy/windy day! Normal everyday driving is about 10-11 mpg. We have gone to synthetic oil and a K & N Air filter in it. If it is out of warranty you could try putting a chip in the computer or go to a 3" exhaust.

I have a very good friend who tows with an 8.1L and his mileage goes in line with Carol's reply. Awesome motor, be planning on stopping at every fuel station as you make you journey. =)

Just FYI,

As you can see from my sig, those are my specs. Those, plus I have the 5-Speed Auto Tranny.

I get about 8-9MPG towing, and 13-14MPG without the fiver.

Bear in mind, I have the A/C running, and my lead foot itching. I never got close to lots of other folks’ mileage, no matter what vehicle I was driving.

I am, however, expecting loads more compartively trouble-free miles of service from this diesel engine than folks with gassers can expect. If you are planning on towing a lot, you may want to consider the diesels....

I think that hubby gets about 16 mpg when he isn't towing our Monty. Since we are still in the process of buying the Monty I would say that the MPG when pullling will be about 8 MPG, based on pulling our last Fifth Wheeel.

My Tahoe gets about 20 MPG while on the highway and about 16 MPG while in the city. I know that fuel prices will have an impact on our travels once we decided on a unit.

Just for comparison we have the 05 F-350 6.8L V-10 with the 4:30 diff..the truck weighs 7350 full fuel and loaded for camping no people in it.We only use it for towing and it only has 5600 miles on it.(is is 16 months old. The without camper mpg is increasing as it gets more miles on it..around town (at least my town) 10 to 11 mpg...interstate no camper 13 to 13.5, we are very light footed, with 3400 in tow interstate..not many big grades. 63 miles per hour, Cruse control. A steady 10mpg and have seen 11.5 on a nice level stretch and also saw 8mpg on a long medium grade... We do not expect it to get much if any better. My best guess is a average of 8 to 10mpg in varying weather and grade conditions.We are not promoting gas motors here..in fact once these EPA, Fuel and new motor standards sort themselves out if the numbers are acceptable we see a diesel in our future. I think the newer V-10's are a little better on MPG than the 8.1L but not enough to get exicted about. With all of the changes and new regulations about to go into effect it is IMO a difficult time to choose new motors Gas or diesel. I think the effect will be less on gas motors than the diesel motors but that is yet to be seen..
