F250 Super Duty

Question for all the super duty owners? When towing your rig, has anyone experienced their TV miss when the vehicle is under load, as in going up a grade. I've been having trouble with our TV for some time and the dealer can't seem to find the problem. They have already replaced the turbo booster and that helped but it still seems to miss(not sure if that is the right term) intermittently when there is a load change. The truck seldom has a problem when not towing but has 'missed', 'coughed' now and then even without the RV. Nothing shows up on the diagnostics. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similiar problem. Thanks!

You did not say what year model the F-250 is. Mine is a 2001 and I had a problem with it completely dying but would restart as if nothing had happened. This was about 70000 miles. I had been enlightened by other Ford owners that there was a problem with the camshaft position sensor in the 7.3L PSD's. This was my problem. May not be yours, but the CPS is replaceable under warranty to 100K miles. Hope this helps.

I have had trouble with my 2005 F250 bucking under a load. I haven't taken it in yet but have heard it is usually an EGR valve or turbo problem. This site has lots of good info.

Charlie, it is a 2004, 6.0 litre super duty. Flyerone, actually your description is better than mine. Bucking works for me and apparently when it bucks it emits black exhaust out the tail pipe. I've already had the turbo replaced and will have them look at the EGR valve and also the fuel filter, Cruzin 2; thanks for your suggestions!!

Every once in a while I will have a miss but not too often. When I check the codes with my 1705 it is my CPS. So I carry a spare CPS in my glovebox along with a 10mm wrench. So far my original CPS still works.

The oil companies are presently taking the sulfur out of our fuel which means you will probably need an additive as time goes on.

Make sure you keep your fuel filter changed.

I have an 04 Super duty also but have not had any problems to date. A friend bought an 04 Super Duty 2 months after me and has had nothing but trouble with the turbo boost blowing the hose off the turbo on long hard pulls. It happened on almost every trip and he carried spare parts and tools to repair on the side of the road. Finally the Ford dealership gave up on trying to fix it and gave him a new 06 replacement for the difference in the MSRP between the two.

My opinion is that most Ford dealerships do not have qualified diesel mechanics and you need to find a Ford dealership that really understands diesels. On one trip my friend had to have his truck towed to the nearest Ford dealership and they had a knowledgeable diesel mechanic. Problem was he only had time to make emergency repair since he was booked for a month ahead. He made some suggestions for my friend to have checked when he got back to his regular dealer but they still didn't understand enough to fix it correctly.

I had a fuel regulator switch replaced that presented the smoking problem but the smoke was white in color. I had 2 cam position sensors (cps) replaced. The engine would not run at all either time. The switch and sensors were covered by warranty. As lightningjack11 mentioned, I also carry a spare sensor in the glove box now.
The fuel filter is certainly something to check.
I think their was a recall on the 04 power stroke to replace the faulty turbo hose connection mentioned by dr howell. This hose was loosely connected at the top front of the motor. If the hose is loose you will have the black smoke and loss of power. Good luck!

If your cps goes out completely the engine won't start. While trying to start your truck observe the RPM guage. If it doesn't move wille trying to start there is good chance it is your cps.

Just thought I would toss that out.

Thanks for the advice, folks! So far, fuel filter has been changed as has the turbo booster, waste gate, cps, and EGR valve been checked etc.. Not sure what they're going to check next but goes back to the dealership next week. They have one diesal mechanic who seems good but who knows! If they find out anything will keep you posted just in case others have a similiar problem. Maybe I'll end up like your friend, Don with a new truck....ha! I will also mention the turbo hose connection. Thanks again!!

CPS is the Cam Position Sensor located on the front of the 7.3L engine.

Larry, the Ford 6.0 psd does not have a waste gate. Strange, but true.

Also, the dieselmann site is a good source. Check the psd 6.0 tech bulletins listed there.

I have noticed it as well. But does not do it with cruise control set. The cruise control kicks down the transmission when under load. So with the cruise off and I get under simular load conditions, I push the trans to downshift and no problem.

Sad to hear so many are having problems with their F250 diesels. My 06 only has 11K miles but it's been a great runner and pulls like a mule.

You should be here at the rally. So far we've had four trucks down with injector problems, three while enroute to the rally and one when getting ready to leave. One Dodge, One Ford, Two GM's. It seems no brand is immune to these problems. With so many having the problem almost simultaneously and in the same state I have to wonder if there's a fuel problem lurking here.
