Roaring noise from Diesel

I get a roaring noise from my ...or Our 7.3 sometimes, early in the AM and pulling a grade (worst). When I get on flat land it goes away. Like I said, it is sometimes only except for one mountain and then it does it everytime. Also in slow city traffic in town when it is hot out.Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

The radiator fan has a thermal clutch. When it gets hot enough, it fully engages the radiator fan. That is what you are hearing...

Noisy, isn't it?

You're right! That thing makes a lot of noise. First time I heard it I looked out to see if a jet was overhead! One good thing is that you KNOW if it is working or not.

Ditto! Scared me to death when I first heard it. Just the fan kicking in as Eric says. Nothing to worry about until you don't hear it kick in on those long hard pulls.

The first time we heard it, I thought my brand new truck was in the midst of extremely premature death throes!

It will certainly wake you up!

Yep, radiator fan. Annoying, but nice to know it is working!

Just want you Ford Nuts to know that you don't have a monopoly on the fan noise. The first time I heard on my old truck I thought all hell had broken loose. It's not so bad on the Duramax but it rarely comes on.

Mine doesn't come on often but when pulling a total of 22,920 lbs up long, steep grades, on a hot day, the temp needle will climb about two widths of that skinny needle, maybe three, then the fan comes on and the temp drops like a rock. Yes, it's nice to know it's working.

I own a 2003 Ford F-350 Dually with 6.0. I took it to the dealer because of a roaring sound coming from the engine. I usually heard it when the engine was cold. It only lasted for a mile or so. I also heard it on several occassions when I was pulling by 5th wheel in the mountains. The dealer changed the fan clutch and I no longer hear the noise.

It is great when it gets quiet and the temp needle is back to normal. It seldom runs , just a few mins in 90+ weather.
