RV Skirts

We are using our Monty as an apartment while we open a branch store in Santa Fe (main store is in Albuquerque). It is cold here and the heater is on and off all night. There are two other rigs here that have skirts (if that is what you call them) that enclose the entire underside. Any info about these? Cost....effectiveness....availability, etc.

I've heard of folks who made their own out of foam board and it worked well. Here's a company that makes skirting for RV's if you don't want to make your own: http://www.rvskirting.com

I thought to be called a skirt you had to wear underwear, otherwise it is a kilt, so if your rig doesn't have underwear then you should be looking for RV kilting.

Yep they work pretty good but are not cheap around 500+ bucks had them on my last 5th, on my new one i said the heck with it and just turned up the heat on really cold days, if you plan to be in cold weather and wind for a long time year after year they ARE worth the cost in the long run, in the short run not so much..... IMO

We have one that goes all the way around, have spent many a winter in cold climates. It works well. You just have to find your own way to secure it down in the high winds, the one we have now has several sandbags to weigh it down.First one that wore out had gromlets to spike it down.It may be a cost effective way to go with the insulating boards as mentioned, our skirting cost $1400.00, but we are fulltime and when hubby was working we ALWAYS seemed to end up on the coldest winter construction jobs...LOL

I do not have skirts on my coach and I am in the northern part of the country right now. I keep the furnace set to 50 degrees 24/7 and try to use electric heat during the evening and overnight hours while I am home. With the average temps being in the low teens, I am averaging 14/16 gallons of propane use per week right now. It was around 8 gallons a week when temps were consistently above 35 degrees. I've noted a few rigs in the park have used the foam board insulation under their rigs...If I am here next winter, I might try to do something similar to see if that helps lower the propane usage.

This company is a good place. I got the rv window screen and it sure helps here in Fla. http://www.ezsnapdirect.com/

I made my own skirting using the EZ Snap System that jsmitfl provided the link to. Was not that hard to do and seemed to make a difference inside the coach.

Effectiveness is the issue.
At night when it is between 15 /20 degrees with little wind, thermostat set at 55, the furnace comes on at least every 3 minutes. It runs for about a minute. Not good for my beauty sleep (or propane usage).

Do you have pillows in the vents? That will help a bunch. I removed the covering on the back wall of the storage area and insulated with 2 inch hard foam MAJOR difference. I blocked off vent in storage area. I have tried skirting, it does help in very cold weather.

Wayne, what do you mean by "pillows in the vents"? Blocking off the vent in the storage area does what?

It has been in the single digits here in Santa Fe. Have made arrangements to have skirting made. The reason I am doing this is because the heater is cycling every few minutes during the night and I find that annoying (yes, I am a wimp). Also I would not like to continue giving the Propane company so much business. If I use space heaters to keep the living space comfortable I fear that the tanks are not being adequately heated.
I am going to put a light in the utility space to further warm it.
Does anyone put external heat (a light or ceramic heater) under the rig when skirted?

David,

We are up in the NE Pocono Mts. and it has been dropping into the teens every night and when I saw the basement temps drop into the low 30's I decided to get a small 1500W ceramic heater at Home Depot for about $22. Now the basement reads in the mid 50's and we feel the heat coming from the cold air return for the furnace under the interior steps and also the bedroom floor is warmer. We found the heat does not cycle on and off as much at night with this set-up.
