Prodigy Brake Controller Survey

I am using the Prodigy brake controller. The Monty is the 3150RL. Prior to the Monty I had a Cougar. On the Cougar the Prodigy setting was around 4-5. On the heavier Monty the controller is now set between 8-9. The rig stops fine, but the high setting is a concern.

Of those who might use the Prodigy, what is your model Monty and what is your controller setting?

I am asking about this due to the recent postings about the problems with over-greasing the axles. Is my higher controller setting due to the over-greasing, or is it normal for the heavier Monty.

Hi Dennis. I have the Prodigy P3 now, and the Prodigy before that on the same 2980RL just a different TV.
I have my P3 set to 11 Volts and B3 agressive heavy trailer my Prodigy I had set as high as it would go. I have never been able to lock them up even after new linings on all 4, I could on a road with gravel Ha. I also have that funny feeling of a panic stop will it react like it is supose to and locks them up? or not ?????????
As for the high setting, a twist of the knob to a lower number when driving in town less agressive.
when I called Prodigy they told me each trailer is diffrent and should be set to where it does what it is supose to do and our Montys are a heavy trailer.

I don't know what my Prodigy is doing. Everyone is showing settings way higher than mine will even go. 6 is the top setting on mine. And I also have never been able to lock up the brakes on the trailer. Not that I want to, but would like to have them show me that they are doing what they are suppose to be doing. I'm looking at going to the Max Brake in the near future.

Just because the wheels won't lock when the brakes are applied does not mean that the Prodigy is not set right. Set it for what it feels best to you and don't worry about the wheels not locking up. Mine is set at 6.3 and then adjusted such that the 5er brakes engage just before the tow vehicle brakes. You can feel it when you adjust it. I've been using a Prodigy since 2003 and have never felt that it wasn't doing its job.

On our 2008 3400RL I had to set Prodigy on 7 (+/-) .3. On current Monty only have to set same controller at 4 (+/-) .3.

Npt only is each setting different for each 5ver, but for each vechicle and driver. My 2001 gmc, i liked 7 and boost 2.
Miss it on my new vehicle with integrated brake controller. 6.0 volts, but doesnt apply the brakeswhen backing up. Prodigy was great in that aspect.

We just installed the Max Brake over the weekend. It was expensive but the first trip out with a trailer compared to my Reese brake... No comparison. It follows smooth no jerking. Gradually adds more break the harder you press the brake pedal. I was also able to install it myself in about an hour and I am not a mechanic. Not trying to steal the thread just someone mentioned it here.

I too have the Max Brake and it is the best controller I've owned. Once it is set your done even if you pull several different coaches. It is worth the expense.

3150RL ... 5 year old Prodigy ... 8 with boost 2 while on road ... 8 with no boost in campgrounds.

When I get to a CG that will allow me to work on my RV I will be adding the self adjust brakes and the Max brake. Thinking that may be a great situation.
