The next day after the phantom problem, the problem became no phantom. I could start it, but it ran very rough and then would die. It was blowing white smoke out the exhaust (meaning rich mixture). I had to have it towed 43 miles to a dealer. They got right on it, but could not pull the EGR valve because it was frozen to the mixing chamber. They ordered a mixing chamber, install a new EGR valve and installed the mixing chamber with new seals.

After testing the new installation, the truck runs fine. On driving it back the 43 miles from the dealership, I noticed no problems. It ran smoothly and acceleration was normal. These repairs were covered under the 100,000 mile diesel engine warranty with no deductible.

Good tohearthat Stiles.. We just purchased the Premium Ford ESP plan as we will be 3 years old in less tha 30 days.

My ESP plan has a $200 deductible to avoid catastrophe, so I am glad the 100,000 engine warranty took the hit. I have 53.000 miles on the truck.

I asked what might have caused the failure in case I was doing something to cause it. The service rep said that it was probably bad fuel over time, not a bad tank full. Further stated the fuel supply is not as good as it once was.

Good to know your Phantom Phord is now a Phixed Phord. Phantoms problems are no phun and it's good they phound the problem!

I am approaching 60,000 miles on my Ford and it will be time to replace the fuel filter(s), amongst the other billion things.

I also have the 200.00 deductible on the ESP. We just hit 33K miles. We also have been warned of bad diesel fuel mostly water in the fuel. We try to keep to high volume stations and use a additive all the time. We had all those filters replaced at our 30K maintenance. The bill was not a pretty sight.

When it comes to diesel fuel,you are just seeing the begining. It is only going to get worse. I thought white smoke meant lean mixture and black meant rich mixture

When I had my 25000 mile oil change a couple of weeks ago, my dealer told me I should change out the fuel filters at least every 20000. Cost about $120.00.

Pulling a trailer it's every 10,000 miles or 400 hours.Check your manual

Son's in-laws had white smoke on 6.0 PS. Ended up being EGR cooler was cracked....coolant getting into cylinders. They also did head gaskets while the cab was off to the tune of $5500.

The RV park owner has a new F250 diesel (had a Duramax). It is a beauty. Cooled leather seating. Hope the new engine works out good.

White smoke from a diesel is coolant getting into the combustion chamber. Any amount will raise Havoc with rings, cylinder walls and other areas in need of lubrication. One of the first indicators of a blown head gasket or leakage of coolant to the combustion side of the cydinder/ cylinders --- White Smoke!!

Actually, it may have been covered under the emissions part of your warranty, which is actually better than the standard warranty because I believe it's for 8 years.

On our trip to the land between the lakes KY I picked up some dirty diesel fuel somewhere. Had to clean out the pre-screen in the camp ground. Going to do it again soon because it's plugging back up.
