Tornados and RV's don't mix

We have had discussions about bad weather and RV's several times. Well, they mixed with bad results this evening in Michigan. Fort Trodd campground in St. Clair Countyv took a direct hit, if the photos tell a true story. Reports of 1 to 4 dead are coming out. Here is a link, not sure how long it will stay good, but a search for the name of the park should reveal several local telie stations and news outlets have stories and photos.

Our prayers to the families.

Tornadoes don't mix well with anything.

I've driven across patches of road where a tornadoes have sucked the pavement off the road.

Oh Lord....I looked at the link, if you get a chance play the video...it shows a 5er? tossed about 50 yards out into the lake. This video sends a chill down my spine. This maybe the weather we had a short time ago.
Prayers....LOTS of prayers...

Reports so far are that the unit IN the water was UNOCCUPIED.

One dead per the sherrifs report on the 10 oclock news. 4 sent to the hospital.

The really scary part of this, if I am understanding the news reports, is that there were NO storm warnings at that time. All had been allowed to expire. No thunderstorms watches, nothing. Which means???? it did not show up on radar????

Yes, that is scary. The video News Reporter stated that there was no Tornadoe, but just a severe storm with very high winds. Heck, wonder how high the winds were in order to do that much damage? And it's hard to believe the the local weather service had no knowledge of the storm.

I would guess that there may have been an unofficial tornado. If not then that definitely had to be very strong winds to do that kind of damage.

Straight line winds can do a lot of damage and be as strong as a tornado. The damage indicates straight line winds , I have seen folks post that they have drove through 60/70mph winds. That is doubtful. a 60/70 mphh straight line wind taken broadside will take your camper for a ride.

Our son lives in St. Clair County. We live in Macomb county right next to St. Clair. We were also there eating dinner earlier. Camped at Ft Trodd also a few years ago. To close for comfort. I guess it is official now....it was a tornado.

That is what I understand Sharon, the study of the trees downed in the campground made the determination that it was not straight line winds.

Now that is just to close. Glad you were okay.

News never mentioned that there is a KOA about a mile or two down the road on the opposite side of the street that was spared.

I, too, live south of this area. Channel 4 News did report about the proximity of the KOA. The news also explained the reason why there had not been any tornado warning. As Chuck Gaidica said (weathercaster), the radar showed the storm and severe thunderstorm warnings were up. However, as you watch the radar images progress, you see that the typical bow echo just started to form. As he mentioned, a tornado has to start somewhere and this shows that exact thing happening. It was very interesting segment.

As to the damage - boy was it scary looking! Fortunately for the death/injury total, this camp is mainly for those who park their rvs for 5-6 months and travel to the park for weekends. As it was 2PM, many people had left for home so there were not many folks there. Those that were interviewed later told how it was like an extended family there because they sort of spent their summers together. It is very sad for those involved and their loved ones. Good thoughts are being sent their way!
