Steel Wool Burns

Last year while in Pahrump,NV we were visited by this cute little pack rat who chewed several shirts, made off with a whole bag of Hershey's kisses and moved 3 cartons of Dcon to the front compartment. Since we are back in Pahrump again I thought it might be a good idea to seal up a few holes. Having read on the forum about using steel wool I started stuffing holes. When I got to the hole where power cables and hydraulic hoses enter the belly from the front compartment as I started stuffing the steel wool into the hole it lit right up. WOW, that's exciting!!!! It seems our little critter had chewed the insulation off one of the wires and the steel wool grounded it. I guess I'll save the steel wool for the plumbing

Charlie try some of that expanding foam on the electrical and hydraulic areas. But I think I would get some electrical tape and try and recover those wires that were stripped by the varment first. Possibly even some of the shrink wraps you can buy for wiring and that may make it a little easier! Keep us informed!

Yup. steel wool is an old survivalist trick to get a fire started. I forgot to warn you about that when I saw the post about using it to plug holes. Sorry!!!

Good one, humorous only after the fact though. From now on I will use another method to check for bare wires.

I used some of that expanding foam at my daughter's stick house, and the critters ate right through it!

The expanding foam is called "Great Stuff" and it is really great stuff. You don't need much, you'll be amazed how much it expands.

Glad no one was hurt in your little adventure.

Those little rats, HA HA , Charlie thats what we use to tell the boy scouts to carry in there emergancy kits, as a fire starter, and one of there flash light batteries, it will get dried leaves and cindeling going real quick. too bad about the wiring some shrink tubing will bring it back to normal.
