Breakaway Cable Problem

On our last trip I damaged the breakaway cable. I've ordered a new one with pin to replace the old one. The problem is that I cannot get the old pin out of the jct box. As hard as I pull, the sucker just won't budge. Does anyone have a solution?

If the switch is damaged, don't worry about it. Just cut the two wires to the switch, remove the old one, install the new one, and splice the two wires. Make sure when you do, that the pin is installed in the switch, so you don't cause the brakes to be applied when you make the second splice. Also, there is no polarity to worry about, so it doesn't matter which wires connect to each other.

Ditto what Bob said. I replaced mine with one that has the red coiled wire and it stays up out of the way...no longer a snag hazard to apply the brakes when you don't want them to do so. So cheap to go with whole new switch and cable...

If you can not pull it out with your fingers then you need to replace that switch also.

Thanks for sharing this. I had no idea you could get a coiled one. I looked it up online and they are not that expensive. We will likely look into getting one of those.

I just threaded mine thru a piece of plastic tubing and the tubing is big enough to not get caught on stuff.

I used a plastic tie attached to one of the legs of my hitch and thread it thru that when I hookup the trailer. Has worked so far over the years.
