Trouble getting wax off
I waxed the rear cap with a liquid wax for boats and rv's. It went on easy and I thought looked great. But it seems I can't get it off. I have buffed and buffed and still see all the swirls of waxing. I tried soapy water and a mr clean eraser trying to get the wax back off but still looks bad. Does fiberglass oxidise like car paint? Cap looks really bad.

So you put the wax on and it will not buff off?
Yes fiberglass will oxidize without any maintainence. Its actually the gel coat that does the oxidation as the actual fiberglass is underneath. Ive had swirls appear before when trying to wax off heavy oxidation, or tyring to wax a dirty surface, or waxing in direct sunlight.
I would try to put a few more coats of wax on a small test area and see if that helps. It could be that the surface just needs a little more wax to fill in the swirls?
Remember a little dab will do ya. Putting it on too thick has always been counter productive for me as well.
Hope that helps ya!

Not sure if the wax will not come off or just left so many streaks behind it looks that way. I have tried to clean off the wax with a diluted awsome but still looks bad. Wonder if I rewax it with a different wax if it will rub out the old.

Id try a small test area with some regular ol paste wax. It probably will remove the old.

A degreaser will usually take off wax but I'm not sure how it would work on your situation. A dishwashing detergent is what I used to use when I needed to remove wax from a car so to apply something that had to stick to the car.

You might try a rubbing compound. I used to use Dupont #7 but don't know if it is still available. I just bought some Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound as I have a few scratches in my truck to rub out.....

If the cap was oxidized when you applied the wax, you may have just redistributed the oxidation. If you wax an area and find residue on your wax applicator or rag that is the oxidation. The key is to keep using a clean area of the applicator or rag when applying the wax to remove the oxidation. You may have to re-wax 2 or 3 times to remove all of the oxidation. Also when removing the wax, keep using a clean area of you removal cloth to keep from reidistributing the oxidation.
I am not trying to insult anyone here, but speak from experiences I have had. I hope this helps.

Jack

After our first trip this year I got tired of cleaning all the bugs from the front cap. I first washed it well but still had some staining from bugs. I bought Mequire's Clay Bar Kit (Mother's also has one) and clay barred the front cap. This took off surface dirt that did not come off with washing, but still left some staining from bugs. Then I used the Wax Cleaner that was part of the kit and, to my wonderful surprise, it removed the bug stains. It probably removed the oxidation as well, but I didn't really notice. It went on very easy and I wiped it off after about 5-10 minutes or so with a clean, but old, cotton terry towel. Then I used Meguire's Gold paste wax and waxed the entire front cap. I did not find any swirls. The front cap is now nice and smooth, although not a shiny as I would like.
We have been out a couple times since then and the bugs on the front cap come off very easily with a wash with a washing brush.
I also clay barred the horizontal surfaces on the back cap and found the Wax Cleaner cleaned the black streaks that I couldn't get off otherwise. It also got a coat of Meguire's Gold paste wax. It is now very easy to clean and the black streaks come off easy. The back cap has no swirls and is nice and shiny.

Sounds like the paint and/ or gel coat needs more wax. what I have done is to use a spray wax, rub in and buff off at the same time this will even out the swirls you are seeing. I like Mother's Marine Spray wax or AERO COSMETICS WASH WAX ALL (order through Aircraft Spruce on-line.)

If all else fails use some lacquer thinner. That's what paint and body shops use. Just get a gallon at Auto Zone. I used it on the rubber roof to prep the area I put Eterna bond tape on, so it is safe to use on Fiberglass but will take off all wax and stains. Once you're done wiping it down with lacquer thinner your oxidation should be gone and you should be ready to wax. Might wanna try Red Max Pro or Home Depots Zep, I think they call it since RMP is getting hard to find. That's if you're getting tired of waxing.

Or .............. just cut to the chase and buff the end cap with polishing compound. It will remove the oxidation that the wax smeared around. Our end caps are similar to fiberglass boats .. they both oxidize over time. After the buffing ... the wax will go on normally.
