Thank you so much for replying! Your ratchet system looks like a perfect solution - still leaving the tray to hold other things. One of our kayaks is 10 1/2 feet long...do you think there is room to squeeze another 6 inches into the cargo area? If not we'll have to trade that kayak off and get another ten footer!
