Back up Diesel fuel tanks

I have a long bed truck, and wonder if there is a manufacturer out there, that builds an add on Diesel fuel tank, that will still let you slide 4 x 8 sheets of plywood, or 4 x 4 posts under it, and also have the Tonneau cover fit over it?

Not that I have seen. I had the same concern about losing bed space. I have a 2012 long bed Silverado 3500HD diesel dually with a BakFlip hard Tonneau cover. I installed the 50 gal Transfer flow tank in the bed. It is designed to fit under tonneau covers. But as you know you will lose about 1.5 to 2 ft of bed space.
To solve this problem I installed an X-treme gate tailgate extender which gives me back my 8ft bed so I can carry 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall on occasion, with the tailgate down. It works great. Here's a link to their website:

OK, Titan says they make one for my truck on line, but they don't ask questions like Transfer flow did about my truck being a dually and 4wd, so I will have to check with them. Does any of this void my current extended warranty with RAM? If I get the 55 gallon replacement fuel tank, how will my fuel gauge be affected in the truck? It says this tank sits 2.5" lower then the OEM tank, so I am assuming the Titan shield that is extra, protects the bottom of the tank?

I would imagine it will certainly void your warranty on your tank, but as far as the rest of the fuel system goes you'd have to check with the warranty company. My guess is when you ask, the girl at the phone bank is going to say it will void your warranty. The Ford dealership here puts these tanks in, and say the rest of the warranty is intact, but they would really have to be splitting hairs to deny you, the only thing that's changed is the tank. The 2-1/2 inches, will still be above your cab steps, I don't think if I were getting one I would get the shield for a poly tank?

When I had my 50 gal in bed tank installed I also replaced my OEM tank with the TF 61 gal tank. It didn't void my warranty. They just replaced the tank and installed my factory fuel sending unit assy in the new tank. FYI, This question was asked on the Transfer Flow website:

Will I void my vehicle's warranty if I install one of your fuel tanks?

NO! The Magnuson-Moss Warranty – Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act of 1975 protects consumers from such fraudulent activity by new car dealers. Under this Act, aftermarket equipment that improves performance does not void a vehicle manufacturer’s original warranty, unless the warranty clearly states the addition of aftermarket equipment automatically voids your vehicle’s warranty or if it can be proven that the aftermarket device is the direct cause of the failure. The easiest way to check this is to look in your owner’s manual under, “what is not covered”. Under Magnusson-Moss Act a dealer must prove, not just vocalize, that aftermarket equipment caused the need for repairs before they can deny warranty coverage. If they cannot prove such a claim or offer an explanation, it is your legal right to demand compliance with the warranty. The Federal Trade Commission (202 326-3128) administers the Magnusson-Moss Act and monitors compliance with warranty law.

I added a DeeZee tank bought on Amazon with the transfer equipment from Northern Tool for little over $550. Added 36 gallon to capacity. Empty range is over 1200 miles; towing over 800 miles. Tank takes up about 9 inches of space right behind the cab and matches existing toolbox. This is in a '16 3500 CTD.

We considered a add on tank then realized we stopped every 3 hours or so and could fuel then. We have not had a problem finding diesel all over the country since 2006.They are also expensive and the cost vs benefits issue does not play out for us. Great idea if it meets your travel style. Having a 800 or 1000 mile range is not important to us.We are also not in any hurry.

Richfaa,

You must be much more easy going than I am. :-) Since we are involved with our Church, we are on every other month for doing our volunteer work, so we try to limit our trips to a month. So when we decide to go from Lake Tahoe to New Orleans, like we just did, we had 13 RV parks, and 4,600 miles on the RV, 6,100 on the truck, in 33 days. So our shortest leg was 235 miles and our longest 405 miles. With only having a 32 gal tank, and this trip, it seemed like we were either in heavy cross winds or head winds the whole way, we only averaged around 9 mpg. Normally we avg. around 11. So this gives us a range of around 260 - 300 miles leaving a 40 mile cushion depending on the winds. Sure we see Diesel signs everywhere, but you don't know if they are convenient or not, until you have passed the off ramp, and then some seem convenient, but then no one in the station that works there, knows the height of their overhang? Our experience has shown that about 80% of the people don't know their clearance height? So we stress out and will usually top off our tanks at a rest stop with 2 five gallon cans I keep in the back of the truck. So I am tired of this routine, and look forward to ditching the 5 gallon cans and having a range of about 470 - 570 miles with a new 55 gal tank installed where the OEM tank is now. :-)

We can get 40 gallons in this F-350 which as a easy 300 miles Plus if we choose to. We stick to truck stops to fuel preferably FJ. Your travel lifestyle is far more busier than ours we are definitely in retirement mode and in no hurry to get anywhere . We added a extra day to our trip to our Florida winter residence this year just because. we are going to the Rally in Conn in July then then tour the NE states other than the rally reservations we have no idea were we are going or how long we will stay. You have a very busy schedule and the extra fuel tank makes sense.

Rich,

We are in retirement mode too, just need to back off some from our church duties if we want to not be stressed with time constraints.

Well, I bit the bullet, and am getting the Titan 55 gallon tank installed next Friday with the extra protective shield to protect it from road hazards, since it hangs down 2.5" more than the 32 gallon OEM tank. I'm curious since they will be using the OEM sending unit how my gauge will show me what's going on and how many miles till empty etc.?

What I have heard on the Fords is, the dealership can flash the computer software to deal with the tank gauge but the miles to empty are stiil going to be incorrect. Worth the trade off in my opinion?

We had a inbed tank custom made so it fits under our tonneau cover. We can go approx. 800 miles towing before refueling. We found that while traveling on the interstate there is no issue finding fuel, but when we are on secondary roads it is. Low clearance, pumps that you cant get in to ect. One added benefit is that when we stop for the night we usually go in to town. Fuel is up to 20 cents less per gal away from the highway. I probably will never recover the cost of the tank but it can be moved to another truck down the road. Its just one less thing to worry about.

Badram, those were my thoughts as well. Here in AZ, fuel runs around $2.40 to $2.50 most places but I have filled at Costco twice in the last month for $2.05. Saving .35/gal per tank is over $20.00. Also, my DTE gauge stays on the max until the aux tank is empty.
