ready for second airconditioner now
Our Montana was not wired for the second air conditioner. Today Don did the wiring and a circuit, for the second air conditioner. Now all we need to do is install the air conditioner. Going to get a Penguin low profile made by Durotherm. He had to thread the wire up from the basement to the vent where the air conditioner will be.
Good to have an electrician! He comes in handy!

Dustytuu,
I am ordering the same low-profile Duo-Therm Penguin 15,000 btu with heatstrip next month. This is going to be installed in April when the coach comes out of the garage. Sure looking forward to having the second a/c this summer. =) Let me know when you get yours installed how it works for you.

Will let you all know when we get it installed. Probably won't be until later this spring. I am sure it will be great!

I added two extra double circuit breakers to my panel in the 3400 and identified which circuit breaker is on which circuit. This provides me with spare breakers and makes sure I have a balanced load on each circuit.
The 3400 has the true 50 amp service (50 amps on each side of a 240 V line). I can't ever imagine using that much power unless I fire up my welder, while brewing coffee, cooking popcorn in the microwave on high, toasting bread, cooking breakfast on the electric skillet, and trying to keep us warm with the electric heaters and the water hot with electricity.

Those thinking of adding a 2nd a/c--only way to go. We are so pleased with our second a/c.

Ditto to the comments above. You will not be sorry with two. It cools down a hot camper much faster than with just one. I don't think we would ever go with just one again unless we move into a much smaller trailer.

Was wondering if you do not have the camper set up for the second A/C will the framing handle the extra weight of the a/c. I don't have the second one and don't suppose I ever will. Just wondering. Maybe someone has some info on that.

Called Montana customer service, gave them our vin number. They said it will support a second air conditioner. It was an option on our 2004 model.

I would not have Montana without the second AC. We added ours Lo profile as well last year at beginning of summer because in hot spring months one unit could not keep up with the heat. Been in some 100 plus days and two units work great in keeping unit cool. I installed mine myself as well, had to fish wires was not that bad of a job, took little over two hours to do the whole thing, fishing wire down the wall most hardest part of the install.

Broome101,
Just curious, was your coach prepped for the 2nd a/c? I am wondering why you had to fish wires??

Mine was prepped with frame and wiring already there. We had the dealer install the second A/C as part of the purchase agreement. But they said it was really easy if the trailer had the second a/c prep installed from the factory. I would bet the only other hard part besides fishing wires would be getting it up on top the trailer. Another thing to watch is the overall height of the trailer. Mine hooked up has a 13'3" overall height to the top of the front A/C. Have to watch the overpasses a little closer now.

Montana sky, no I was not prepped for second air. My dealer told me we would not need it when I ordered my coach that was the one thing he was wrong about. So I did one myself since I had spare breaker already in my panel I used it works great.

There's an interesting topic on rv.net about "favorite or must-have feature in fiver". Something that caught my attention was the 2nd A/C, but also the 2nd A/C at 15K, NOT 13.5K BTU. Any thoughts on that repeated desire expressed on there??? One guy did say 15K main and 13.5K bedroom, but all others recommending the 2nd A/C said to MAKE SURE the 2nd was a full 15K.

Dave,
Either one 13.5k or 15k will work for a 2nd a/c. My personal choice is 15k I would rather have too much than not enough, and the price is within $200 of each other. The other reason I want a bigger 2nd a/c is when in the living room I do not want to have the main a/c running all the time. Creates alot of noise that makes you either talk louder or turn the tv up. My plan is to use both at the same time to cool the coach down then just leave the bedroom running and have the living room on auto at the set temp. This way the coach will stay cool and the living room will not be so loud, just my plan and way of thinking...

I think the rational for 13.5 in the bedroom is that it is smaller up there and the A/C has less area to cool. Also cold air is heavy and will tend to fall to the floor and spill down to the lower level of the fiver.Just my personal opinion but I think 13.5 is plenty for the 2nd A/C .Of course there is not much difference in price so..what the heck...

It is interesting. Not a lot of explanation on why - they were just adamant. Think I'll go over and ask. Shouldn't get flamed for that, should I???
Might not be a big deal. Maybe just concerned that it is much better to have the ability to over-cool, rather than be under-cooled. Is there that much difference between 13.5K and 15K?
