Meds question
Any of you guys with the ole Prostate situation taking a capsule for a little 'relief' during the night?
I was curious as to your thoughts and side-effects of it if so.
The V.A. Doc just put me on it (Tamsulosin HCL) Omnic or Flomax...
Thanks

Ozz I have a young friend doctor. He said not to take his grandfather to our VA for anything but hearing aids and eye glasses. Ours is the last hospital you will ever go to.
Lynwood
I didn't mean they were all like ours. I know they aren't and I'm sure they do some great work especially for mental problems. If you live in western Va just be careful and get a second opinion.

Just like eating at a restaurant, different food prep, different prep cooks at each shift, different management, I would not generalize in such a sweeping manner for an entire system. Also, different opinions of the critic.
Thanks for the input anyway

In this instance, my private Doctor gave me a script for Flomax, I went to the Pharmacy to get it filled, with no Prescription insurance the bill for the meds would have been around $500, the V.A for a 3 month supply is $9.00 for my disable Vet category. The V.A. won't fill scripts from your 'outside' Dr, has to be the V. A. Doc. Same diagnosis/treatment from either Dr.

Been taking the same stuff in generic form. Really made a difference for me at nite - no more getting up at all!

Mike, it has been 20 years since I have slept the night through, it would be a wonderful thing if that happened. Fingers crossed...
Thanks for responding.

This is a good thread Ozz. Men don't seem to want to talk about this stuff but I am interested if these meds do the trick. I hate getting up 2 - 4 times a night so keep us posted.

Whatever you do, continue to keep a close eye on the PSA. I had the same problem for 10 years, PSA finally spiked, diagnosed with cancer in May. Had the prostate removed in June, no problem anymore, needless to say. Hang in there.

Thanks Steve, good advice. they routinely take a full blood test every time I renew meds.
I am glad your cancer was abated. We just don't know how lucky we are with good health

Hi Ozz. I've been on flo-max generic for about 3 years, with the exception of when I had my cataract surgeries. For some reason, I had to stop a few weeks before each surgery. No negative effects. My last visit to the Dr. he suggested I cut down to every other day, which seems to be working OK. I'm also taking saw palmetto supplements, which is a natural product that isn't as effective as flo-max, but is less stressful on your system. I think the Dr. is hoping to get me on nothing but the saw palmetto eventually.
My problem wasn't getting up at night, it was having a sudden need to go. That has been taken care of. I also agree on watching the PSA tests. My brother-in-law was just diagnosed with stage 4 prostrate cancer, and we're all scared to death for his health.

Thanks Tom. I was wondering about it lowering blood pressure in that maybe I can stop taking blood pressure meds, will wait and see how it goes. Mine isn't very high without meds.
Well wishes for your brother-in-law, hope he is not in pain and recovers.
Thank you for jumping in here.

We men tend to put off health concerns. We need to listen to loved ones and health care providers. Scary words like "we are taking ground fire" or "incoming rockets" don't come close to hearing a Dr say "you have cancer". Been there done that.

Ozz, VA put me on the same med (maybe we have the same urologist). Don't get up once I hit the rack. Working good for me. Get mine from the VA there in KC.

VA has me on something else, I generally still get up 2-3 times a night. but it does lower my blood pressure they tell me.
also, ozz, the VA does accept scripts from outside doctors, you just have to run it by your VA and then they fill the script with the same meds if it is in the VA formulary.

Thanks Eddie, I will talk to them about the meds issue.
I have a Dr. appointment with my primary Doctor at noon today, I think I am allergic to the Meds I got at the VA, my hands/skin tingle, headaches and can't breathe well at all in bed. Sucks to get old...
