Tire Mileage Life: Sailun
Hi everyone. Searched for this but didn't find an answer.
At what mileage are you finding you need to replace your Sailun tires? I replaced my rear set after wear due to a bent axle (another story) at 8600 miles, my front two were replaced due to wear at 13,000 miles. After axle replacement and alignment, I am now looking at needing replacement on the rear after 11,000 miles and the front again after just over 6,000 miles. I've attached pictures for your viewing enjoyment. I regularly check the pressure and run them at 110 so some of the wear doesn't seem to make sense.
Has anyone else experienced this type of wear? How many miles are you getting out of your Sailuns. Would Goodyear be a better value?

From your pictures your tires look good I see little ware on side of one.most of us will change tires every 4 to 6 years due to tires deteriorating form inside even though they look fine from outside. You might need to get it aligned again

Was just aligned a couple of hundred miles ago. Probably too soon to see the results from that. Because we are full time and have traveled about 20,000 miles in the last two years, we are replacing our tires due to mileage vs time.

Both the Sailun 637 and the GY G614 will show more wear on the outside/inside edges. This is just the effect of tight turns. There is a huge amount of meat on the edges to allow for the wear. The treads itself look fine for another 20K miles.

I bet the tire companies love you! Those tires are nowhere close to worn out.

I had though that the "S" shaped mark in the middle of the tread was the wear marker. When it is gone, it is time to replace the tires. Have I been looking at the wrong indicator? Should I be looking at the hash marks on the edge of the treads instead?

I've been running truck and trailer tires of all descriptions for the last 50+ years and have never seen properly aligned and inflated tires wear like the Sailuns on my 5er. I have wear just like what you are experiencing. It started showing at approximately 10k miles. They now have about 30k on them and still have good tread on the center three beads and significant cupping on the outside two beads. They are still preforming great. I will continue to run them as long as possible. BTW, my local tire dealer who sold and installed the Sailuns replaced one free of charge and returned it to his supplier and no one could give an explanation for the cupping on the outside beads on all four tires. The one he replaced is also cupping.

The "wear bar"is the proper indicator for replacement.
See the 'bar' in between the tread?
My tires are wearing at the outer edge because I ran them at too low a pressure.
The circumference of the outer edge is smaller than the middle of the tread. If you run the tire too low as the tire turns one revolution the outer edge must scuff to keep up with the load bearing inside tread.

The hash marks and the S's on the outside edges are just siping. Wear indicators are usually horizontal bars that run all the way across the the tread between the grooves.

This wear will happen even running 110 cold psi.

I'm at 20K on my original equipment Sailuns. They still look good except for the scuffing on the outside and inside edges from turning, and now i know that is from the tight turns. I'm probably going to need the allignment soon, I measured the front to rear hubs on both sides and there is a one inch difference.

After sweating the first year with the standard China bombs, I was looking to get a set of Sailun G 14 plys. I went to my local tire dealer and he told me that he carries Sailun but has found that the same size rating Westlake tires have longer tread life. He also said he has never had a single trailer customer come back to him with a report of a blown tire. They were a little more expensive than the Sailuns, but I put about 2000 miles on them this summer and the handling-ease of pulling is much better than the originals.
My new tires barely have the little mold numbs worn off of them. I'm hoping for 20-25K miles out of them.

I would be wary of Westlakes. There have been numerous failures reported on other RV forums. While maybe a little better than the original China Bombs, they seem to rate close to the Rainiers for issues.

you went 20k miles and your axles are out about 1 inch ? WOW my rear axle was 3/4 out and front was 1/4 out and only lasted me 9000-9500 miles. you're doing good if you got 20k that far out !!

I just changed out the original Sailuns on our Montana after 25000 miles. Went with the ST 235/85R16 because of the increase in weight (4400 lbs vs 4080 lbs) over the ST 235/80R16. Tread in the center of the original tires was still good, but edges were showing wear. At $132 a tire why would you take a chance on a blowout?

I replaced my first set of Sailuns at 50k and they probably could have gone 10,000 more on my SOB. Replaced them when two of my 16” rims began leaking so upgraded to 17.5 rims and Sailuns. Great tire.
