Oregon Full Service Station?
Came up Rt 101 and got settled in at a CG by Gold Beach OR. Went into town and pulled into a Shell station that had diesel for $3.99. That thrilled me since coming out of California. Started to get out but service station employee came running out and told me that Oregon service stations were all full service. I flashed back to when I was 16 years old! I couldn't believe it. He pumped my fuel, washed my windshield and my rear window. And the pavement on Rt. 101 was much better today.....I must be dreaming!

Actually in this case at this station it would have been "put a senior citizen to work" because the employee was about my age. But he waited on me with a smile on his face and was very friendly.

Joe,Where is your next stop coming up the coast? Everyone would like to give you some pointers I am sure.. To bad you do not have a month to see everything... But I guess I should not speak to loud as I have lived here for 35 years and never taken a cruise to Alaska... Been there many times but no cruise...

Service in a gas station would totally freak me out.

While it is true that it is the law in Oregon you may still pump your own diesel. Gas has to be done by the Service Station folks. It was a major item for me to get used to when we traveled in Oregon. At Fred Myers paid $3.86 per gallon. HamRad

New Jersey is also full service. It's against the law to pump your own fuel.

We sat back and enjoyed the service a couple of years ago when in Oregon. Even if it is the law, it was a pleasant change. And the gas prices were the best anywhere during our cross country trip.

I got scolded a few years ago in Oregon. Had the nozzle in the tank (of rent car) when the guy came running out and told me I could not do that. Little did I know.

Pumping gas at a service station was on my bucket list for when I retired. When I was kid I worked at a Texaco station doing the Texaco guy stuff. By the time I retired all the stations were self serve. I was bummed out.

It can't be a real flash back unless they gave you some trading stamps and/or a free glass.

HamRad is correct, you are allowed to pump diesel.
We had major issues with this when we visited Oregon. Man is kind persnickety about his fuel. (Be nice now, he and I both realize he is persnickety! )
Some stations don't care what the law is.
Oh, yea, Oregon and fuel stations. Memories.

Friday we are moving up to Lincoln City and staying there for 2 days. Then on to Woodland WA on the river. Any suggestions on "must see" places would be helpful!

Your are right Tom....plus if the guy would have came out in a uniform and the fuel would have been .19 cents a gallon I would have totally freaked out!

JandC: When you get up around Woodland, you will not be far from Multnomah Falls. In fact, there are several there along the Columbia River Road off of I-84, East of Portland.

Try staying at Premeir Resort in Lincoln City. View of the ocean and a nice restaurant across the street at The Spanish Head. Also a Casino in North Lincoln City called Chinook Winds and a nice outlet mall half way thru town. Mo's seafood eatery coming into Lincoln City on the coast side of highway. The best beaches on the west coast.

Not all gas stations in Oregon will let you pump your own diesel fuel. Some stations will not let you pump your own if it is a combined pump, with gasoline & diesel nozzles on the same pump.
Not sure if it is over a safety concern(explosive gasoline fumes that "could" be ignited), or a liability limiting company rule, so they don't get sued by some moron that accidentally fills up their own diesel truck with gasoline by selecting the wrong nozzle.
I suspect it is the latter reason.

When an attendant pumps your fuel you still have to be aware. I learned many years ago growing up in New Jersey that there are ways to cheat at the pump that less than honest station owners have used to sell more than they pump. That's harder to do now with computers, but its still possible. If you are not watching the pump and the nozzle the possibility of cheating is there.

Lincoln City Premier RV is where we are booked for 2 nights. We didn't spend much time on the beach here at Gold City due to two days of high wind, so looking forward to that area. Doberman, will look up those falls, thanks.
